We also had DARE. I only remember that we were given some workbook (?) where we read about students getting hooked on drugs and a police officer visiting.

DARE for me too! I don't know Red Ribbon, but it would be hilarious if "have you seen my red ribbon?" was code for "I want to buy drugs".

I re-read this recently. For some reason, when Claudia and Kristy are baby-sitting at the Newtons', I thought both Aland and Trevor were caught by the police, but it was just Alan.
I'm still not sure what Alan and Trevor's plan was. They both wanted to ask Kristy and Claudia to the dance, but they were too shy, so they decided to call them when they were baby-sitting and not say anything? I guess they didn't realize what they were doing was really creepy and scared the poor girls. That would be terrifying whether or not a burglar was on the loose in Stoneybrook! They just seemed to go through a lot of work just to steal the notebook and copy down the information, then call them to say nothing.
Also, in what world is Alan Gray shy? Also, Kristy never shut up about him so I kinda figured she liked him, especially since she was pretty quick to accept his offer to the dance. I'm a little disappointed that she rewards him after he pretty much terrorized her! I realize he probably didn't realize what he was doing, but still, c'mon, Kristy.
I laughed when Claudia says she and Stacey wore jeans and baggy sweaters to the dance and Kristy wore a dress. That is just so odd to me! Shouldn't it be the other way around? Although, I can see Kristy wearing a dress (as long as it's not TOO fancy) to a dance, but sweaters and jeans for Claud and Stacey at a dance? Uh, no.
Is the fact that Janine hides candy in her room too ever mentioned again? I can't see Janine hiding candy in her room. Not that she can't enjoy sweets, but she just never struck me as the type to keep junk food hidden in her room. Unless Mr. and Mrs. Kishi are so strict that they forbid their daughters from ever eating sweets, then maybe, but I don't think that's the case.

I feel like it would have made more sense for the boys to be purposefully pranking the girls, that sounds more like an Alan thing to do, whether he fancied Kristy or not. It also doesn't make sense to me that Kristy wore a dress and the other girls didn't. I feel like if the others did then it wouldn't seem out of character for Kristy too because it's just that kind of event, but for them not to and Kristy to just doesn't quite fit!

There are so many creepy guys already and I hate how they get the girls after this behavior. I wish Kristy and Claudia told the boys no because they don't date creeps who lurk outside windows and make prank calls. I'm tired of people saying boys tease you because they like you. It just teaches girls to accept bad behavior from guys.

It's early installment weirdness. Early Kristy wore skirts to school. I think it was because she just didn't care about clothes at all. But then she didn't want to wear dresses (jumpers are OK I guess?), which aren't much better in my opinion (I don't like wearing either at all). I do find it funny that Claudia and Stacey basically wore Kristy's later "uniform" in this book, and in later books they give her heck about her clothes. It is annoying, though, that if Claudia or Stacey wear it, it's cool. And if anyone has a distinctive style, like Ashley or Tess, it's dorky. AND if anyone tries to be more stylish and cool (Dawn in #50 and Mary Anne in #60), they get hell about it. No, you can only be cool on Stacey and Claudia's terms, but not cooler than them! Lol. Rant over.

Rant over. Haha, yeah, absolutely. It's so funny. I agree, early on she just wears whatever. I mean, I know that at that age I really just wore what I had and what was typical for a 12 year old to wear, but from Grade Seven on I started to think about and choose my own clothes more especially once I had a job and was starting to buy some myself. The whole Claudia and Stacey 'cool' thing is so funny. The biggest deal is made about how Claudia's clothes are so different and unique and creative, but then when others do different and unique it's not cool! They were very possessive of their coolness. Claudia and Stacey were always the coolest with their 'sophisticated,' sort of more mainstream coolness, but I feel like over time all the girls got at least a little bit of their own kind of coolness, just with their own unique style rather than more mainstream 'cool' coolness (even if certain others didn't like it!) especially Mary Anne after that haircut and the new clothes haha. Like Jessi had her ballet-cool thing and Dawn had her free-spirited thing and Kristy was all tomboyish. Except for Mallory, I feel like Mallory never got even a grain of sand-sized speck of coolness. Poor Mallory.

Mallory would've made a really great hipster. She could have leaned into being uncool and owned her appearance if she had any confidence.
