Same here. But I think it’s almost like a nanny relationship? They babysat them so often it’s kinda similar. I could see that with Jamie for sure, then possibly Charlotte regarding Stacey. I'm guessing that the curfew might have been different because it's work-related. Funny, as an adult, I want to be home by 9 at the latest.

I liked that Stacey and Kristy kind of bonded in this book. It's subtle, but I thought it was cool that Stacey cared so much about the club that she'd even take Kristy's terrible suggestions of lower rates and housework. Interesting dynamic. Agree! These two are at opposite ends of every spectrum, so it's cool to see them agreeing. On the same token, Mary Anne and Claudia both thought Kristy was being too extreme, and I liked seeing them taking the opposite stance together. Two underrated relationships got to shine in this book. I don't think Mr. Spier's curfew is unfair for a 12 year old? Also agree. 9pm is after sunset, and considering Mary Anne didn't have a phone and couldn't be reached at all times, that actually seems generous. I think Ann created all these rules to make him seem strict, but didn't realize how inconsistent they were. I wish we'd seen more of Stacey and Kristy interacting throughout the series. The only other one that stands out to me is in European Vacation, which was hilarious. I think they'd make great friends as adults, since they're both ambitious and smart. I wanted more Mary Anne and Claudia interaction, too. They have more in common than they realize. 9 pm does seem generous. I didn't really go out at all at that age (I'm very introverted, more so than Mary Anne), so I'm not sure what my mom's curfew would have been. I'm guessing I had to be home by nightfall. Although, this was in the early 2000s as opposed to mid/ late 80s, and I think people were more careful (even paranoid) about things like that than they were in the 80s. I highly doubt that anybody would let a 12 year old babysit in my area right now unless they were sitting for siblings for a short period of time. The city I live in has a high crime rate and it's hard to get around without a car, though, to be fair.

A twelve year old being out alone at night is just preposterous to me. I was only allowed to sleep over at my best friends house at that age and we stayed at her house. Where else does a twelve year old need to be? I don't know if adults are supposed to think Mr. Spier was strict of just his kid. It's normal for kids to think their parents are strict even though they aren't.

This was about the first book of the series I ever read way back in primary school in the 80s.
Ahem.
Kristy went a little overboard with her ideas. Housework? They were baby sitters not housekeepers. Lower rates? And giving away jobs? What's the point of having a club if they were giving away jobs. Anyway glad Claud was against it.
This wasn't my favourite book. This is one of my least favourites. Why would Stacey's parents send her to some quack? And why did they make her do all those weird tests not to mention handwritten tests to test her iq. Diabetes have nothing to do with someone's IQ. It's like they were seeing how smart or how dumb she was.
