I thought she was too mean as well, inge. I mean she forces DM to slam the door shut right in MA's face. That scene always makes me laugh, but it is really mean.

What still cracks me up is Stacey and Claudia "smushing" napkins in each other's faces in front of Jamie's 4 year old friends on his birthday. Yeah real mature oh sophisticated ones

^ yeah, but remember this is when they were actually 12/13 yr old girls as opposed to mini adults.

This is my joint favourite book with No10. I always enjoy reading the scene where we meet Dawn for the 1st time. I felt sorry for Mary Anne when she was left all by herself at lunchtime, though.

This book has a magical 16th chapter!
Yeah, but it could all come down to point of view. Maybe MA didn't think she was stunning, but Stacey happened to.
Would anyone have preferred MA's mom be Abigail from Maryland like in this book, instead of Alma from Iowa? It makes sense that she might have grown up in New England and then met Richard. Of course, there's no reason why she couldn't have left Iowa for the East coast at some point in her life. I guess the whole story is in MA's mom's letter to her, or Verna could have told her.
Mary Anne and Kristy's flashlight "speak" still bugs me. Seems like it would take forever. Baffling.
When I first read this I didn't know what jailer meant, but it sounded kinda bad, so I though MA must have said something absolutely terrible to her father!
Sharon and Richard's messages in each others yearbooks are way lame. Richard quotes Camus and Sharon's like, "How can we part, Richie? We have one more summer...hold on to it." Blegh.

Seriously! I think they said at one point that they could literally look into one another's bedroom windows...so...

Their fight at Jamie's birthday party makes me laugh, but it also seems kind of unrealistic. Smushing napkins in each others faces? How the heck did Mrs. Newton ever hire them again after that?? I think someone else said that, if anything, she should have been like, "...and this is why you don't hire 12 year old babysitters!" and I totally agree with that. If I were her, NO WAY would I have hired them again.

And then there they are (well, Claudia) helping with Lucy's christening party. Jamie learned a thing or two from the sitters when he almost spills the punch on Lucy's dress...

And yet, four-year-old Jamie was actually able to restrain himself.

This book has a magical 16th chapter! And Kristy's Big Day only has 14 chapters! Does it scare anyone else that all of us know things like this?

I loved Maryanne in this book. I remember feeling so happy when she finally stood up to her father. I agree, their fight was just like the fights I had in middle school.

As much as their fight in this book is one of the most ridiculous and snarkish in BSC history, when you think about it, if that fight had not happened, Mary Anne would not have had to sit alone at lunch, therefore would not have met Dawn, which means that Sharon and Richard may not have gotten back together, Dawn wouldn't be in the BSC and Mary Anne may not have become so confident this early in the series due to Richard's strictness and loss of turning point events... ooh FATE at work here .

^hehe.
I agree with hitzpink, why on earth did Mrs Newton hire the BSC again after that scene at Jamie's birthday party? I would have kicked them all out and called their parents!
