Not much love for this book, even though it's generally not that bad. I just found it kinda dull. The "mystery" was pretty uninteresting and it just felt like they weren't that eager about it, thus the way Charlotte and Buddy came in to help them "solve" it.
The most amusing part to me was the seance! I loved that Kristy came to the door dressed as a gypsy, and Mallory actually believed that Sophie was speaking through her. God, Mal.

Haha, that's probably the only Mallory book I could tolerate. It wasn't bad at all, actually. The seance was hilarious, Kristy as a gypsy! I thought the mystery would have been even more interesting if they'd actually discovered that Mal's Jared was actually Dawn's Jared.

I loved this book as a kid! I used to go to my relatives' houses and ask if I could poke around their attics. I just knew I'd find my own mystery hidden in a dusty trunk.

I'll write more on this book after I get some time and reread but I know that I loved it. This was the first BSC book that I ever read and the one that got me hooked on the series. Of course, I think I like it so much because I generally like any books that have a bit of history in them.

I love Mallory realizing that comics can actually help Buddy learn to read and write better.

This one was always one of my favourites. I think it was the combination of being a myetery and Ann writing it.
I loved the part wth Charlotte's book Katie and the Sad Noise -- And her theory that things aren't always what they seem and they ahve to look past what's in front of them.
And I can't beleive no one has said this yet but If only I was thirteen instead of eleven. Life would be a picnic

lol! Yeah, her journal entries are classic.
Forgot to add that I found Claire adorable for the two seconds she appeared: "Tell Stacey I love her and that she's still a silly-billy-goo-goo." Aww.

I didn't like this book that much, it was just... blah. Not bad, not great. The subplot with Buddy was cute, though. This one did get me a little jealous when I first read it - the BSC always had such cool mysteries which made my life seem dull Nothing mysterious ever happened when I was a kid.

^ OMG, ditto! And if a mystery did happen, there was no way in hell I could have solved it.

Don't worry, I've snarked it on heaps of other threads, the BSC-quotes thread for one. The journal entries are my favorite part of this book. I also like the tutoring sessions with Buddy.

And if a mystery did happen, there was no way in hell I could have solved it. I was reading Mary Anne and the Haunted Bookstore yesterday, and the part where they dust the coffee cups for fingerprints reminded me that one night when I was eleven, I was sleeping over at a friend's house and someone stole the stereo out of her dad's truck. We used her eyeshadow to dust the truck for fingerprints. This helped exactly as much as you'd figure it would, which is to say, not at all.

You clever Nancy Drew-aspiring BSC mystery-capable sleuther! I actually like this one. The seance is a classic moment in the BSC. I find it interesting that Kristy is all decked out in little-girl-playing-with-mommy's-make-up makeup. Wasn't it all like bright blue eyeshadow and orange lipstick and bright red rouge? There is also a mention of the 10pm bedtime for Pike children nine years and older...what happened to the no bedtime rule with Mr. and Mrs. Pike? And, this book continues the ever fascinating Stoneybrook mystery the girls keep investigating that is Grandfather Hickman and Jared Mullray. And, isn't it convenient that Mallory didn't notice the side pocket in the trunk at the start. And of course, in said pocket contained several sheets of paper outlining Old Hickory's confession. Mallory could have solved the mystery at the start if her fingers weren't so stubby and chubby. Yes, Mallory has chubby and stubby fingers.

i thought it was, you have to be in bed by ten but then you can stay up as long as you want as long as you're in your bed.

Other than a few vague references in the earlier books, we didn't really see any evidence of the Pikes "no rules" policy. They were extremely conservative with Mal especially.
It's what you'd expect from such a sturdy girl, I guess!
