Hmm, I can see your point about the Mistake cover. Maybe it's the clothes then, for me...aside from the models' faces and hair, I think the clothes always gave them away.

The expression on Mary Anne's face looks like she's smelt cat piss or something...

Hey, it's funny that you mentioned Baby's Named A Bad Bad Thing (notwithoutmyhandbag) because I've been a member over there since 2007! Long-term name nerd here, lol! There was a recent thread on BSC series names, too!

I actually liked this one much better than "Great Romance." I ignored "the haunting" along with some of the fights. As un-likely as all 8 Pikes being injured or sick was, that subplot was amusing and different. I also felt as though we got a small glimpse into the Pike house other than the usual chapter 2.
This re-read struck me as to just how nasty MA was and not just to Dawn. One of the "worst" parts was that she intentionally tried to "get back at" Dawn by suddenly being friendlier with Kristy. It's too bad Kristy never called her out on that. Dawn, definitely can be a snoop, over the top patronizing and acting as though she's entitled to folks falling at her feet in agreement. It's no secret she's one of my 3 very least favorite characters in the series. I'm finding more and more that it's "sweet" MA (I still don't see that as true other than in TSB), who is more often cruel.

Man Zoar I was thinking that about ma and kristies relationship in this one too. They come up the stairs all giggling but then stop when they see Dawn. It seemed pretty blatant to me also when she asked kristie what she was doing on Sunday. Poor kristie thinking she had her BFF back!
I also think MA was rubbing that Perkins job in dawns face when she came an asked don't you want to know ... Blah blah blah

Mary anne really got on my nerves with this book too and I hated her for years in it (and Dawn's Big Date, Dawn and the Older Boy) though I whine about Dawn all the time, but up until Mary Anne's Makeover, I think I liked Dawn for a bit then went back to not caring. After she behaved herself in California (post carol breakup) I was starting to like her again too, but now I think Dawn was unempathetic to Mary Anne's abandonment issues too in this book though she was playing victim too much as well.

They were both pretty victims and martyrs at the same time in here!

They live in such close quarters...I would expect them to all catch things at the same time. Then again, wouldn't their immune systems have kicked in after awhile, making easier for them NOT to get sick just because someone else in the house (or more than one someone) was?

^That is a good point. I remember each new preschool teaching job I started, I was always warned that I'd probably have to get used to the various germs. I still would like to know just how big the boys' room was to accomadate 2 sets of bunk beds. In "The All-New Mallory Pike," it sounded like Mal's room might be "bigger." I ask because 4 boys in one room always sounded like a lot, so close together. But then, maybe that's me still not getting why the Pikes either never built an addition and or (if it wasn't already) finished the rec room, adding a bedroom and full bath. I wonder how many bathrooms the house did have because that could add to spreading of bugs too in terms of towels.

^ The idea of people sharing towels grosses me out. The idea of the entire Pike family sharing towels is even worse!

^Yuck, me, too. I didn't mean literally sharing towels just that even with however many towel racks their bathroom may have had, the towels would all be in close proximity.Though I could totally see one of the boys swiping his hands dry on whoever's towel was closest to the bathroom door and that person not always liking that!

my family has color-coded towels for hand drying, so everybody gets their favorite color towel and nobody wipes their hands on someone else's. i hope the pikes had something like that.

^ I doubt it, give how relaxed they were about rules. The Rossos from "Ten Kids, No Pets," on the other hand probably did something like that.

^I would hope they were a bit more on top of things where health was concered. Although we all know how long it took Mrs. Pike to take Mal to the doctor in "Get Well Soon, Mallory," so maybe not.
