I don't remember this at all so I must be getting this book confused with Claudia and the Sad Goodbye. Is this the one where she is giving the art class in her basement? That's what I'm thinking of. Andrew doesn't seem scary at all to me, either, sotypical. That reminds me of when my cousin was little, though, and she would run around growling and saying "boo" and her mom would jump and give a fake little scream. Then she would turn to us and whisper (loud enough so my cousin could even hear her) "act scared - she's scaring us." This always irritated me so much. It was like, she's not scaring anyone and if she believes she is, she's really dumb. That's what the Andrew/Jenny thing sounds like almost

I will need to reread this one now, because of course as a kid I thought Janine was the mean one, but now after reading this thread Claudia sounds like such a brat!

I just finished it and I did feel bad for Janine this time. She is misunderstood by her whole family.

And all this time we were led to believe that Claudia was the misunderstood one...

I always - and have always - liked Janine. I don't really remember this one but do remember thinking the title should have been Janine and Mean Claudia. Claudia was always pretty mean to Janine in my opinion and super jealous of her. I think a lot of Claud's problems (including those in school) came from insecurity with not being as smart as Janine.

Tiff's take on the title: I think this book should actually be called “Claudia’s a mega-b*tch; an exploration of sibling rivalry gone wrong, while several 13-year-olds care for a large number of children during their summer vacation instead of loafing like any sane person.” Or maybe “Hi, I’m Ann M. Martin, and this is one of the last few books I wrote in this series that acknowledged the passage of time in any sort of realistic or logical way.” Or maybe “What kind of public library doesn’t hold Nancy Drew books (or whatever current YA series is popular? Seriously? They’re not trashy or dumb or even dumbing down or whatever…” How about “It’s a good thing Janine wants to be a physicist, cause she and the words don’t work well together."

I recently reread this one, and for the first time, one part really bugged me. Mimi send Claudia upstairs to ASK Janine if she wants waffles. Instead, Claudia says "that's what Mimi and I chose." I never thought about how left out Janine might have felt before now.
On another note, this is one of my favorite excerpts:

Haha! That's a really funny quote ;D and I agree this book should've been Janine and mean Claudia. Poor Janine

I had to laugh out loud at that part.

Haha, that's hilarious!
I hated how they made Janine speak, though. It's SO unrealistic. I mean, proper grammar and a few big words would be much more realistic, but they really over-did it with her.

Janine's grammar was unrealistic. I know somebody that uses proper grammar all the time and he does not sound like that at all!

^ Agree about Janine's grammar. That also bugged me. Just reread and thought it definitely should have been Mean Claudia. I really felt for Janine and think Claud was just terribly jealous. Her guilt over Mimi’s stroke was also another example of her insecurities. I did enjoy the Jamie subplot (he’s always so cute and I did have to laugh when he screamed in Lucy’s face) and the camp for the kids – love group sitting plots ;D I thought it was really cute how Claud called Andrew “Andy” and he said his mom called him “Andy Pandy”. This was the same nickname as a little boy named Andy who I’ve known since he was born (is now 17 – ahhhh! I’m old!) and was always like a little brother to me so it made me smile remembering him. It did make me feel uncomfortable reading about Mimi losing mental ability as this is one of my worst fears (same reason I hate reading about Uncle Joe). My grandpa had several strokes and mini-strokes but fortunately never lost any function or abilities. Claud visiting Mimi in the hospital and Janine being the calm one and the one who was okay with staying at first reminded me of how I was the one the whole family kind of turned to when my grandpa got really sick even though I was only 12, and then after he died when I was 15. It almost felt like I was the only one in the family who was “together” enough to handle things.

I agree with everyone, that when I first read this book, i though Janine was mean. But upon my recent reread, I wanted to smack Claudia. What ya'll are saying about her and why she was so mean makes alot of sense. Poor Janine!
