^ That always drives me crazy about Nannie (that they make such a big deal out of it - especially since she's not even that old). I think Mimi acts older than Nannie because of cultural (not trying to stereotype so hope I don't offend anyone) and personal differences. Some people are "old" even when they're not. My grandma has acted like she was in her 70s since she was about 45 (no kidding ;D) but her older sister is in her late 80s and barely acts 65.

^Yess. I always wonder if Janine feels bad when Mimi refers to Claud as "My Claudia". It's kind of odd because Mimi doesn't seem like she'd be the type to choose a favorite, ya know? maybe she seem claudia right after she was born and seem how she look exactly like her..is probably why she called her my claudia..

Maybe Mimi has a special closeness with Claudia because she could see how the Kishi parents tended to favor Janine?

I always thought Mimi had a special closeness to Claudia because she took care of her from birth. Didn't she move in either right before or right after that time? Kind of like Emily and Nannie's relationship, I always thought, where the Grandma is the primary caretaker so even closer to the child than the mom. I dont' really see the Kishis favoring Janine as much as I see Claud not letting them get close to her because she thinks they do.

I think Mimi acts older than Nannie because of cultural (not trying to stereotype so hope I don't offend anyone) and personal differences. Some people are "old" even when they're not. I think that's partially true -- Mimi is more serious than Nannie is, so that makes her seem older -- but I also think that Mimi actually is older than Nannie. Since she has a stroke and dies, it's likely that she was older than Nannie, who was in good health, although, of course, it doesn't absolutely guarantee that she was older. Re: Claudia just perceiving that her parents favour Janine, I don't believe that Mr. and Mrs. Kishi favour Janine over Claudia as a person, but I think they do make a bigger deal out of Janine's accomplishments, whether it's because they can relate to them better or they think they're more important or what.

^ Agree about Claudia's parents but think that they also might not appreciate her artwork at the (supposed ;D) expense of her schoolwork, either.

^ My grandma wears "slacks, "though. Is that different? ;D It's funny how some people act so much older. My Grandma acts lots older than her sister, who is actually 10 years older, and always has. I have to laugh when I think about how she was "old" when I was little but was really just the same age my mom is now....

Yeah, I agree with what you said about Mimi being the primary caretaker. Up until I was fourteen I went to my grandparents house every day after school while my parents were at work. Me and my grandma had a much closer relationship than with her other grandchildren. While Janine and Mimi may have been "close" to some extent, Claudia and Mimi had a bond going on.

The bond between Claudia and Mimi reminds me of the bond I had with my grandma until she died my freshman year. She was my mom's mom and we always had a stronger bond than I had with my other grandma, my dad's mom (she's still alive). It wasn't that I didn't love my other grandma, I just felt closer to my mom's mom because we spent more time together.

^ Sorry about losing your grandma. I lost my grandpa, who I was the closest with out of all my grandparents, 10 years ago and still miss him. I also understand about being closer with one side of grandparents. I'm much, much closer with my mom's side, who lives next door and have always taken an interest in me. I don't even communicate with my dad's dad and step mom anymore - they don't even know my name (literally - can't remember it and call me "kid" all of the time ;D) I actually am closer with my mom's aunt than with them.
