^ It really isn't. Hmmm. Maybe Ann was referring to using "jerky" as a very broad term. Just like saying "that's gay" is a popular term now. I remember jerk was a popular derogatory term to use in the 80s

I just re-read and think Ann meant jerky as in "sappy" or "corny." It did make me sad to notice as someone up-thread pointed out that Kristy did indeed label (thank goodness not to his face) Jake as a fatso. I have to say Helen, I love your thought of Jackie "growing up to be a real sweetheart." That is sweet and I wish we had gotten to read more about him as a person minus his label. Still love this book except for Bart's ignorance. My favorite part will always be Bo's birthday party. I wish we had gotten to read about it and had Shannon (the dog) ever aged her party with Bo in attendance. As for Kristy and Bart as a couple, their relationship really did sound so genuine in this one. It is too bad Bart disappeared for many a book only to "end" with "Kristy + Bart." I'd have rather read more about early Kristy and Bart than Stacey and all her "luvs." Finally, I think it is great Karen at 6 was so up on spelling. I still say it came across to me like she might have been looking down on the rest of her team for spelling Krushers with a K. I thought that was kool, much better than the Klinic, that I didn't like at all, maybe because the Krushers came directly from the kids, especially Jackie.

I had the hardest time finding this book. I'd read the first 19 and several after that, so I wanted to get it all done chronologically. So I bought it on Kindle, and...I mean...I knew it was about the Krushers, but the title is because Jackie is...in the book? Although, to be fair, Jackie did get several good scenes. He was the one who suggested the name for the team, then lost the ball in their first practice and hit it through a window in another. Then the whole lemonade stand thing and faked injury comes up, and yeah. I still think the name should be more significant to the Krushers, not just one of them. But then I guess the extra focus on Jackie would just feel weird. I mean, the book ends with Kristy calling him after the game to say congrats, when she already said it to the rest of the team. And then the letter says that Ann enjoyed writing the character in "Logan Likes Mary Anne" and apparently, this book was supposed to be his starring story. News flash, Ms Martin: You could've changed one sitting job Kristy has and it could've been someone else's starring book entirely!

I did like the Kristy and Watson bonding. And I liked seeing Kristy's crush on Bart.
Kristy saying that part of the reason that Archie had difficulty hitting the ball was because he was left handed. I remember reading that people that are left handed have an easier time striking the ball because they can hit it from both the left and right side while right handed people can only do it from the right side.
Also, Jessi saying that she's a dancer and not an athlete rubbed me the wrong way for some reason. I feel that if you're a dancer, then you're also an athlete.

I don't remember her ever specifying. I know the pro dancers on Dancing With the Stars (ballroom dancing) are very insistent that they are athletes in a dance sport. If Jessi really didn't see herself as an athlete of any kind then I don't know if she had the mindset for a more competitive career down the road.

^ Yeah, in chapter 6, page 51, she says, "I'm a dancer, not an athlete. Ibarely know the difference between a football and a baseball."

^I feel like maybe the insistence that dancers = athletes is more of a current trend from the past few years - back in the 80s I think it would have been more normal for dancers and athletes to be seen as different things?

Yeah, I think dancing used to be seen as more creative, and an art form. "Athletic" usually equaled sports only back in the day.

It's funny because I totally consider dancers to be athletes. The work ethic, competitive nature, and physicality necessary to become a professional ballerina all meet the definition of other sports. But I can also understand why Jessi considers dance to be so different from traditional sports.

It's like the old assumption that cheerleaders aren't athletes even though competitive cheerleading is very heavy in gymnastics.

I recently reread this and still found it a bit hard to get through. It's still a little too "sport" for me. I don't care for them at all, except maybe soccer, at times. And still wouldn't want to read a BSC book about it. That said, the kids were cute in this one. In my translated book, the title is different (not focused on "the walking disaster" but on Kristy's determination) and I agree that the original title does not seem to cover the content of the book well at all. Favorite moments were Kristy bonding with Watson as well as Kristy's crush on Bart. Maybe it's because he has "great hair" and I am a sucker for a man with great hair, buthe has always been myfavorite BSC "boyfriend". Their walk home holding hands awkwardly reminded me strongly of some of my early crushes - aww ^•^ . However I was dissapointed that Bart didn't step in while his team was bullying kinda the Krushers. Come on, that isn't cool; their team is older and better and blatantly still preying on individual shortcomings of the other team. I didn't think his explanation of being nervous was good enough- it just doesn't invite friendly play to behave like that. And why are there no girls on the Basher team? What a pity! Final thought - would have been nice if we got to see Kristy working a bit harder to set things up e.g. arranging place for the team to meet, practicalities and stuff. Maybe it is just because I am getting older and understanding how much work everything is that I wish that sort of stuff wasn't glossed over a much - maybe no kid wants to read about that

Haha, yeah I was a fan of Bart's described looks. He was cute on the cover of Kristy + Bart = ?
Was there a boyfriend that didn't turn sort of jerky over the course of the series, though? Mary Anne broke up with controlling Logan. Bart pressured Kristy. Robert cheated on Stacey. Ben lost his temper with Mal. Quint was kind of annoying in Jessi's Big Break, I think. Maybe...Josh? He remained ever adoring of Claudia.

^ Maybe the vacation boyfriends, except that most of them only showed up once over the course of the series, so I don't know if that counts.
Of course, the one vacation boyfriend we do see multiple times (Toby) was a jerk who dumped Stacey and later tried to go out with 11-year-old Mallory.

Michel from European vacation was mentioned in an LS book and he didn't turn out jerky.
