Me too. I'd love some fries right about now. ;D
I've actually always liked this one. I felt bad for Jessi not know what to do in that situation, and thought it was actually handled pretty well. I liked the subplot more though - it was great reading about Shannon. She seems like fun! It makes me wish we'd seen more of her throughout the series.

There's a discussion between Jessi and her dancer friends in this one that made me go "huh?" They were talking about how the teachers didn't expect anything from the young underprivileged kids that were brought in for free lessons. Raul (I love that name. Raah Oool.) wasn't happy. Now, is Jessi saying that she's never felt she's had to work harder to prove herself or has gotten the shaft because she's black? Because that is not the impression that I get from her every time she thinks someone is a racist.
I just realized that this book has a pretty heavy main plot, with poor minority kids and anorexia. Plus Jessi got the Deaf Boy and Cancer Girl books too. Jessi sure was a downer, huh?

I think Jessi's response to him was pretty appropriate for her, actually. Raul said that you get "used" to being treated unfairly. Jessi understands where he's coming from--she's been treated unfairly in the past as well--but she hasn't gotten "used" to it or resigned herself to receiving that sort of treatment. She has been lucky because she acquired a bunch of new friends not long after she moved to a new town, got into a good ballet school, got important roles in ballets. I think maybe that's what she means.
She has, though, said outright that she feels she needs to "prove" herself--like when she performed a dance for SMS during Talent Night when they were on vacation in Vermont. But she didn't do that out of defensiveness or because she had a chip on her shoulder, I don't think, just out of a desire to show what she can do. But I haven't read that book in awhile, so maybe I'm missing a reason she stated.

I don't see the word "never" anywhere in Jessi's quote. I think she's acknowledging that while she has had to work harder, there have been times that being black hasn't negatively affected her -- like the stuff booboobrewer points out. And I don't mean to drive this thread off-topic, but I think "Jessi's black" is probably the least funny BSC-meme, and I hate the way a lot of BSC fans act like Jessi isn't ever entitled to comment on the difficulties that come with being a minority. Of course the way it's written isn't going to be entirely natural, since a lot of the books were written by someone white, who would have never experienced the perspective from which they're writing. I'm not trying to sound like a brown panther or something, but people made fun of the girl by asking if she moved to Stoneybrook from AFRICA. I really don't think it's surprising that it doesn't take much for her to be nervous about being judged because she's black.

I usually take "Jessi's black" to be making fun of how Jessi is written in Chapter 2, not how Jessi herself handles her race or feels about it. Like how they say stuff like, "Jessi's black, but it doesn't make any difference to us!"

That's how I take it, too.

So do I. I think it wears a little thin sometimes from overuse, though (like any other meme, orly amirite?).

I remember the part where Jessi decides to talk to Aunt Cecelia about Mary's dieting problem, but she doesn't specifically say who she's talking about. I remember thinking that if I was talking to my mom about something like that she'd demand to know which one of my friends it was.

I can understand why Jessi wasn't sure whether or not to turn in Mary. I liked that she talked to Aunt Cecelia about it and I liked that Mary's problem wasn't solved in one book. I liked reading about when they went to Burger King. Now I want some fries.

I also really liked the Burger King parts, especially when Mr. Ramsey got a chocolate shake. I go to BK often because they have mac and cheese. Hungry Jacks, though, is a much better name. Yes, let's go get some fries.

I don't think Hungry Jacks is a better name than Burger King but then again, I'm used to Burger King.

OMG, your Burger Kings have mac and cheese? I'm so jealous. I only recently learned that Panera sells mac and cheese, and that discovery pretty much made my entire month.

Yep, they do. Since I don't eat meat that truly has made a fast lunch so much eaier! Plus it's Kraft Mac and Cheese. I think its been 2 years since they began selling it...possibly 3. The only "weird" thing is that at the BK closest to me, probably because of the touristy location, the price is 50 cents higher than at any other location! Still, I'll take it happily.
