^ Agree. To answer an earlier statement about Robert not yet having cheated, I think it was the fact that I knew he would and in this book, Stacey kept saying how perfect and wonderful he was. I just really wanted to warn her! ;D

Do we have a thread/poll for "who do you most want to be BFFs with?"
Because I pick Jessi, I think.

^ I don't think there is one but I was thinking about starting one. ;D I would also pick Jessi. Mal would be next, I think.

When I read this book recently, I noticed how different Stacey seemed from her "earlier" self. I usually enjoy Peter’s narrations- they even tend to be my favorite. Ironically, his narration was one of the major things that bothered me about this book. I still like his style overall, but I don't like it as much with Stacey. After going through the books in order and reading more of the earlier ones, Peter’s narration here is like a slap in the face. It’s like he butchered Stacey’s character. Stacey seems so different- in fact, I even think Peter takes away some of her “sophistication.” She seems a little shallower and lacks the “deeper” personality she has in the non-Peter books. I have to admit that Peter’s style can be pretty funny sometimes, and usually I like reading his narrations. However, I just think his style doesn’t match well with some of the characters, and that definitely includes Stacey. I see him doing the voice of someone like Abby better, and for some reason I like when he does Jessi.
Still, I have to say that I really liked other books he did with Stacey- they were pretty amusing, even though I didn't like Stacey as much in them, if that makes sense. ;D I think I really didn't care for this book because it was talking too much about "cheerleading," and cheerleading also seems out of Stacey's character for some reason (except for the fact that she tends to get easily hooked by the "cool" crowd.)

^ It makes sense what you're saying because I think I feel the same way. ;D I agree cheerleading not seeming like Stacey's thing. I didn't care for this book, either, (as I've mentioned a few times ;D) because it bored me - especially the subplot. It also seemed like a lot of the "cool" kids were just suddenly brought out of nowhere. I don't like it when they do that and prefer when they try to use characters who have at least been mentioned (though maybe these were and I just missed it??? I don't read the books in order so sometimes do that. ;D)

^ Agree about the characters. I don't think any of them were mentioned in other books- at least as far as I know. Sheila was around after this book, but I don't think she appeared before. But I don't know all that much, since I haven't even read half the BSC books out there. ;D

Apart from these characters seeming to appear from no-where, if there was such an issue regarding favouritism and special treatment of SMS' sports stars, why had it never been any sort of issue in the past?
I had a hard time accepting Tiffany Kilbourne as a 'troubled' BSC client after she was initially introduced to us as someone who also baby sat when Kristy first moves in to the neighbourhood but apart from that aspect of it, I really related to not feeling like I was any good at anything in a family of people with various talents.
I quite like Robert in this book, even if he is far too mature sounding to be 13. While I feel a lot of people that age do know the difference between right and wrong and have some ethics and morals, a lot are still fairly ego-centric and will keep going along with something even if it doesn't feel right to them if they're gaining something like special attention from teachers and peers.
He's definately more mature than Stacey, who can't wait to be 'in' with the crowd he's not so sure he wants to belong to. On their first date, she doesn't get the point of what he's trying to get across right away she just sees 'the group' as cool.
I also found Stacey being a little embarrassed by the BSC girls at some stages in front of the Cheerleading girls fairly realistic too. Around this age heaps of friendship groups changed in my school and many girls ditched great friendships for ones that saw them in a higher popularity 'status'.
The Cheerleaders annoyed me for not letting Stacey join because she was too good, typical nasty clique behaviour and a bunch of low self esteems. I found it far fetched though that after absolutely no experience in anything of the sort, in a few weeks with training from a classical ballet dancer Stacey becomes better at Cheerleading than the Cheerleaders!

I don't think cheerleading was huge in my middle school, but it was defeintly competitive, not to BSC levels though. But I figure in a town the size of Stoneybrook, that small things could turn out to be huge.

Can't believe I haven't commented on this one! I really liked it, and actually quite enjoy this plot in the books. It was always realistic that this would happen with Stacey, and I also like Robert (Maybe cause I haven't read him in later books Does Robert end up going back on the Basketball team?

I have yet to actually read this book, partly because I can't find it! Its so hard to find later BSC books! But I've read this entire thread, and many reviews of the book! I am best friends with a cheerleader, she's been one since elementary school. The thing is though, she was never really considered a popular cheerleader. She was, and I hate to admit it, one of the few outcasts on the team. It sounds like Stacey sort of!
I think I'd enjoy this book very much if I could get my hands on a copy!

I don't like this book all that much, because as others said, cheerleading didn't seem to me like something Stacey would be into. It didn't fit into her character. I also felt that the favoritism was highly exaggerated. The special treatment the athletes were getting seemed more like something that would happen in high school, not to kids who are only in the eighth grade.

Kylie, I'm not sure if he ended up back on the team or not. That's a good question. This book is actually one of my favorites, but I'm not quite sure why lol. In junior high, we had a basketball team/cheerleaders, and a volleyball team. I'm pretty sure that's it. I don't remember if there were tryouts or if everyone was allowed in. I do remember that there wasn't a big deal made about them. In High School, it was all about football (we had a GREAT team), but honestly, I have no idea who the cheerleaders even were. I think Peter got a lot of his inspiration from movies.
