This book is so relatable ! I wasn't bad at PE (Australia's equivalent to gym ) but I wasn't good either. I was sort of in between . But one thing I didn't mind was swimming .
And boys can be big pains especially when it comes to PE.

I didn't really get the point of gym class. It was supposed to combat childhood obesity I guess. But, at my high school you took it every day for one semester. You were only at risk of getting fat for half the year apparently. Then we did stuff like bowling and badminton, like how is that making me healthier?

I hated PE especially in Australia running outside on the oval in the hot sun instead of indoors, no shower afterwards and they say “no hat, no play” but didn’t seem to care about that in high school. Skin cancer is very real. The American gyms in the books and movies look scary with the climbing ropes. I love being active now and do a lot of hiking but I totally related to Mal in this one when I was a pre-teen. Haha the volleyball angst was so me. Pre-teen boys were awful. I was asked to join an archery team in high school but I didn’t have time and they sometimes had pictures of animals instead of just a normal target.

Yes, skin cancer as well as the risk of heat stroke is real. I'm glad we always had gym indoors in high school and that I never lived in a place that's warm year-round. I was kind of like Mallory in middle school where I was bad at sports, was a tad awkward and preferred reading.

Gym was just not it back in the day. I remember “dressing out” and locker rooms and communal showers - never used them - and loud mouthed coaches and girls bullying other girls. Ugh, just no. Mal was totally justified in hating it and I’m glad there was a whole book about it!

Do you blame her? The guy on the right has a punchable face. She looks like her glasses are on top of her hair.

The boy on the right does look like has a punchable face. I wouldn't be surprised if he got punched in the face for laughing at the wrong person.

I'm going to read these much slower because I'm penny pinching a bit now. My bike for stolen outside my work and I'm paying another one off (plus paying crazy bucks for a really high security lock), so I'm not eating these up in a day like I want to.
But yeah, real life aside, I always liked this one. So far, I think all of Mallory's books are pretty good. Dream Horse is my least favorite so far, but it has redeeming qualities.
As silly as he "theories" are, they're kind of relatable. I'm sure we've come up with some boneheaded theories before. And I know a lot of people find this one relatable. I actually liked gym aside from running the mile (I'm a terrible runner and have mild asthma) and a couple different sports (tennis, badminton, and volleyball. Guess I don't like nets for some reason?). I was never on a team or anything (not good enough), but I did enjoy playing sports in gym class. Also, my gym experiences weren't nearly as bad as Mallory's and I don't think my classmates cared too much about winning. Our gym classes were much more relaxed, you just had to participate.
I do think Ms. Walden should've intervened when she noticed Mal getting singled out. This isn't an actual volleyball team and Mal was obviously miserable. I do think Mal was pretty brave to bench herself, though. Not many kids would have that nerve and Mal comes across to me as the second shyest BSC member.
The brother swap was dumb and weird. This just wouldn't happen irl. Entertaining to read about, though. I have to say that at this point I find the triplets a bit annoying, although Byron is usually okay.
Seriously, Mal had to watch Claire while Mrs. Pike made phone calls? Are you kidding me? I'm starting to see why she eventually goes to Riverbend lol, that's beyond ridiculous. And she had to pour cereal for the Hobart boys? Again, ridiculous. I can see it for Johnny (I think he's 4?), but the other 2 really should be able to do that themselves. Age in Stoneybrook is weird. You know what, I'm starting to agree with Mal and Jessi. Being 11 in Stoneybrook sucks lol!
I might be alone on my opinion that I think it's cool that Mal is good at archery. It's yet anther extracurricular that seems to be forgotten about later in the series (she's also supposed to be the 6th grade secretary), but honestly, it's a win for Mal who AMM usually hates. It's cool to see her good at something besides writing and baby-sitting. Maybe making the team was going too far, though (the celebratory cake at the end was a sweet ending, though).
Yeah, I like this one. Unfortunately I feel like it's all downhill for Mal from here. Getting mono, narrating one of the most hated books in the series (#1 Fan), barely having any late series books and no more mysteries (what is UP with that?), then getting written out of the series. Argh, her treatment was pretty messed up.

I'm so sorry about your bike! I like humans less and less these days.
I remember taking an archery unit in gym class. It was really hard for me. My weak chicken arms couldn't pull the bowstring back far enough. Mallory must have had some muscle on her.

Yeah it's not in the best area and for some reason corporate won't let me take my bike inside :/ The guy stole someone else's bike too. Luckily I've got a few ideas to deter theft for my future bike. That's what I've heard. She does have to use a lighter bow in the book. I wish we'd tried it at my school- I would have definitely been excited about trying it (but I also probably wouldn't have been able to pull the bowstring).

Mallory must have had some muscle on her. She was sturdy I appreciate seeing the unusual sports getting some love. In the Olympics, the nontraditional sports like shooting or sailing have people of all ages because they don't depend only on physical fitness. Having such control over your body that you can direct an arrow into a tiny target far away is still impressive and athletic and they deserve a highlight. It's also really in character for Mallory to excel at something contemplative and solo, an with a long history in books. My husband's bike got stolen a few years ago. They also took the front wheel off my adult tricycle for some reason. It sucks and I'm sorry.

I did enjoy most sports in gym, but not enough to play on a team because I'm overall very introverted. So hiking, biking, etc are more my speed. I can see archery working for her for that reason. Maybe she's also detail-oriented and that's why hitting the target comes naturally to her. Omg I don't know why people steal wheels off bikes. That happened to me too. In my area, everyone assumes people steal bike parts to sell/trade for drugs. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I worksheets be surprised. I'm sorry they stole your husband's bike and the wheel off yours.
