at first i hated that emily had thomas as one of her last names, but then i realized it wasn't about patrick as much as it was about kristy and her brothers. emily isn't more of a sister to andrew and karen -- she shouldn't have their last name only. personally i can't stand a lot of people in selwyn's family, but i don't hate them more than i want to share a name with him, if that makes sense. i wouldn't let my irritation with someone dictate what my name is, the same as how elizabeth and watson shouldn't allow their feelings for patrick to get in the way of letting their child share a name with four kids they both love.

In regards to Emily having the Thomas name, I wonder what Patrick himself would think of it! Something tells me he wouldn't be very impressed. He doesn't seem to be the biggest fan of kidlets Something like "Oh, sh!t. Is she mine too? I can't remember..."

^You put that very well, Oldhickory. When I think about it that way, it doesn't bother me as much though I still don't care at all for their choice. I know a big part of my objection is because we never got to read about Kristy or particularly Charlie (based on Mind Your Own Business, Kristy) even considering changing their name to Brewer. I think if Watson had been honored a little more officially as "Dad," the T-B for Emily (to me) would have indeed felt more about the kids than Patrick. IDK, I still would have preferred, if Elizabeth and Watson had simply asked their kids for name suggestions.
Lol, Sparklymouse. I think you hit that nail right on the head. Either that or maybe instead of distancing himself by 3000 miles he might have fled the country.

I think this book is sweet, but it brought up two things that always bothered me: 1- Mimi really started deteriorating rapidly, it seems like one book she was fine and this one she was not and 2- I really wanted a Stacey book about her life in NY post bsc (and not with the bsc coming to visit).
I also find it humorous how Kristy is talking about how time is funny when she is looking at her old house and can't believe she's been gone a year. You don't know how funny time is Kristy!!!!!
Also - Stacey wore jellies to the carnival! I don't know if any of you ever had them, but god were they uncomfortable! Shoes that were completely plastic - she would have some nasty blisters, but I guess that's okay for fashion.

^ this is kind of gross, but i also wouldn't want to wear see-through shoes on any occasion i might get sweaty, like running after 20 kids at a carnival. but i used to love my jellies and i wore the hell out of them when i was little.

Another one who loved her jellies. I even had jelly flip-flops at one point that were clear with sparkles. I wore them constantly!

What I really liked about this book and didn't notice on prior re-reads was that it seemed like Kristy was at least closer to Mimi than we were led to believe. I wish, well obviously that Mimi had been super healthy and lived throughout the series, but that the two of them had had at least one special tea together, if even as a memory. I agree about Stacey in NY, Wiggirl. We never did hear much about her time there. It still sounded to me other than the mention in this book about her parents arguing that they were doing okay. IDK, I also wish the McGills had not divorced still oh and that they had gotten a dog. I just remembered Maureen's broach had a dog in it because Stacey said her mom liked dogs. We know Stacey did also in the TSB. They totally should have adopted a canine companion.

^ I keep forgetting that Stacey's mom was a dog person! I agree...it would have been nice to see that make a reappearance. I wonder what would have happened to the dog if they'd gotten it in Stoneybrook prior to moving back? Not all apartments allow dogs.
About this book: how did no one in the Thomas Brewer family have an idea that Emily Michelle was coming? Adoption is such an involved process, and there are usually home visits involved. What did Elizabeth and Watson tell the other kids was going on when strange people were coming to visit?

^Maybe the dog could have been adopted by the Pikes?
I think the way Ann told it, no one did come to the house! That was what was so utterly unbelievable about the whole adoption process. Watson and Elizabeth merely spent hours on the phone, maybe filling out some paperwork somewhere? There were no home visits either to meet the entire family, check out the house to see how it would work for a 2 year-old, let alone interviews with each family member and/or health checks. A stork might as well have left Emily on the Brewers' door-step!

^ that is one of my least favorite parts of an otherwise decent book. i've said all this before, but when my family adopted it took five years, and my sister and i (both minors) had to do several interviews, and the agency even asked us (so they would have the answer on paper) how we really felt about getting a new baby. we literally had to give our approval before we could move forward. that any adoption agency would drop off a baby with a family that isn't prepared for a baby, without even speaking to the family except in secret, screams negligence.

^ I agree. Maybe Ann tried to rectify that in a later series? If I remember correctly, doesn't Aunt Allie want to adopt a baby in the Main Street series? And isn't there mentioning, somewhere, about it being a long process?

I thought it was unrealistic too that they got approved so fast, considering that they had no one until nanny agreed to move in, and without talking to all the kids first especially when they have so many.
