I searched for a thread, but nothing came up. I'm reading this now for the first time and omg it's soooo boring. The whole scoliosis thing is dull dull dull. And of course there is a winter carnival The girls have the bright idea of shoveling driveways to earn money, which turns into them scraping peoples windshields for money, which of course makes them loads of money. The people of Stoneybrook sure are generous. I thought Anna went to Stoneybrook Day? In this book she's at SMS, is it later that she switches? I haven't finished the book yet, maybe it's later in this one?

I thought that Anna went to SMS. I never knew that she went to Stoneybrook Day. I haven't read any of the books after 'Anna's Twin, though.

Anna went to SMS specifically because it has an orchestra and Stoneybrook Day doesn't. As far as I know, she never switches schools.

I remember Abby cutting her hair in this one. Does it grow back by the next book?
ETA: She cut gum out of her hair in Kristy + Bart = ?...I'd assume that since she cried about it, a substantial amount came off.

Ohh hmm idk why I thought Anna went to a different school. Oh well.
I was wondering about Abby's hair, too. It seems like she chopped an AWFUL lot off, which is a shame cause Anna's hair looks pretty awful on the cover.
Anyway I finished this one last night and it got a bit better. I was so happy when the carnival was cancelled, but then snow magically fell and it was back on. Boo. The clothes Abby picked out for Anna sounded HIDEOUS. It was kinda cool reading about her shopping with Stacey, though. Very random pairing.

Here is what I don't get.
Why would dinky SMS have an orchestra, but the fancy-pants private uniform school didn't?
What friggen school has an ASTRONOMY club, but not a music program? Seems pretty strange to me.

I think it was that the SMS orchestra was better, which is entirely possible.

My public school, and a lot of the public schools in my area, had fabulous programs that the private schools couldn't touch whether or not it was music, drama, sports, ect. It's definitely possible. Money doesn't always equal talent.

Oh, I'm not talking about talent. Generally, the public schools end up with the kids who are willing to try harder, and end up having more raw talent than what is found in the private schools.
What I'm talking about is the sheer presence of a music program. The books state that Abby and Anna go to SMS because Stoneybrook day didn't HAVE an orchestra, which to me seems completely bizarre. If anything, it would be the other way around, because a lot of public schools can't afford to maintain the instruments/"waste" funds on the arts.

I just checked my copy of #89 (this is what happens when I have 200 pages to read for poli sci) -- the excuse Kristy gives is that Stoneybrook Day School and the public middle school in their district are both too small to have an orchestra. Whatever. My high school had 2000 students, but only about 12 participated in our sad, pathetic orchestra. Then again, if we had more members, they would probably have been better than me, so I shouldn't complain.

It's always seemed weird to me, too, but I guess it's possible that SDS could have some sort of music program without having an orchestra. Maybe, since it's smaller, they have a few little ensemble groups but no full orchestra. While I don't think that's a really likely scenario, it's definitely not impossible.

Well, I'm not sure about the whole orchestra thing, but yeah, this book didn't do much for me. It was SO OBVIOUS that Anna wasn't going to like the clothes Abby chose, although it was interesting reading about scoliosis treatment in the 90s as opposed to Judy Blume's Deenie, written in the 1970s and sounded horrific!!

I liked this book for three things: the shopping trip foor Anna's new clothes, the shopping trip to buy stuff for the Winter Carnival and the Winter Carnival. I so wanted to try the awesome hot chocolate from Just Desserts after reading this!

^ you seem to like the shopping trips in BSC books, Jen! My favorite shopping moment was when Mallory took Marilyn and Carolyn in Trouble with Twins.
