I don't know if a book set in 80s time would be that appealing to young girls today. They wouldn't relate to it, and I do think Scholastic is hoping to grab new little girl fans for the series.
ETA: The baby-sitting. They only had a handful of clients in the beginning of the series. It will be interesting to see if/who is mentioned. Maybe Jamie Newton (Lucy wouldn't even be born yet), since he seemed to be their #1 kid for a while.

I finally heard back from Scholastic Customer Service, and the one thing they told us that we didn't already know is that the official release date Scholastic has for the book is March 12, 2010. So maybe it'll come out even earlier than Amazon says it will! Oh my god YES, day before my birthday.

I like the idea of technological neutrality, too. That would make the most sense. It's actually amazing how many books that we grew up reading wouldn't fly today because of the technology that was or wasn't included. From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is a good example. I just reread that one and thought it would have made an awesome movie...if it weren't totally impossible for someone (much less two kids) to hide out in a place like the Metropolitan Museum of Art these days (the book was written in the '60s). Darn those modern security measures.

Cool! Thanks! If it's on amazon.com it's true! I wish Ann would write books about the girls in both HS and college, and maybe even marriage!

Maybe Jamie Newton (Lucy wouldn't even be born yet), since he seemed to be their #1 kid for a while. Well when I first got into the BSC in the late 90s I didn't understand some of the 80s references but I fell in love with it and felt like I could relate to it anyway because of that. Maybe other little girls would feel the same way. As long as the story itself is good, the rest is extra but that of course is jmo . For this book I agree with everyone else in that the technology should be neutral. It would make the most sense to do that anyway because technology changes all the time and even today's technology could be outdated in a number of years. About the baby-sitting, I'm definitely not expecting to read about all of the clients but I'm sure we'll hear about Jamie Newton since he was mentioned the most in the beginning. That is if they mention baby-sitting at all. I hope they do.

I would think they have to mention baby-sitting, at least some. That's probably about the time the girls started sitting for other people. By the time the BSC started, they all had experience already, so it night be interesting to see how they got their start as individual baby-sitters.
BTW, Raina just posted on the BSC LJ that the book is definitely real and it was Ann's idea. Yay!!

Oh, good, glad to know that someone as inside as Raina could vouch for it. (Makes me glad she has such a distinctive name, too!)
