I would pick a combination from both for the actors, but I like the movie better in general.

I think both did pretty well in portraying the characters and story-tone aside from that TV Stacey felt a little too watered-down and cutesy/insincere. The movie reflected well the style the books took more in the #60s where (especially compared to the #30s which the show was more like), for better or worse, the senior members did seem be older and to have more clearly different personalities and interests and somewhat stronger conflicts rather than tending to be really close and cheerful friends.

I grew up more familiar with the movie, as I was born in 1992. However (since I am watching the episodes in quarantine!), I feel like the TV series captured the feel of the books much better and is a more accurate representation of the time period during which the books were popular.
The movie kind of came out around a time (again, my general impression of things) when the series was in the beginning stages of jumping the shark (Dawn left, Abby came in as a replacement, the plots get more unbelievable, the characters become stereotypes of themselves). Also the movie doesn't really capture the feel of the series in that it's more dramatic and revolves around serious issues. The girls look way more mature than 13 and don't actually seem interested in kids or babysitting.

I was even under the impression for the longest time that the movie cast weren’t as believable as friends. The tv show cast gave off that they were close friends. Also a fellow nineties baby too, I was born in 94.

I was born in '85 so I got to experience both. I prefer Tricia Joe over Jeni Winslow for Claudia, Jeni doesn't look Asian American..I noticed there were two different actresses for Dawn in the TV show..Avriel Hillman was great as Kristy, Schyler was decent, both TV and movie actress for Mal was good, same with Mary Anne and Stacey. With the parents, I prefer TV show Elizabeth..both TV show and movie got Watson wrong for appearance..like Harold he was balding and had BROWN hair, not white or graying black..and he had more hair than Harold for sure because Harold was almost as bald as Mr. Clean based on the description.

There was only one Dawn for the show. The budget was pretty low. Maybe she had a bad wig in one episode that made her look different. Like poor Mallory did in the whole series...
