We know all about how horribly the BSC Members behaved at Jamie's 4th birthday party, how they "silently" react each time Mrs. Prezzioso dares to call, and even later in the series when poor Jamie thinks MA is "dead." Oh yeah, Dawn and Stacey's "ecology" class. But as I re-read the series (again). I just finished Mallory and the Mystery Diary, I was really struck by how pretentious Dawn spoke to Mrs. Barrett and how not very nice she was to poor Buddy. I was wondering (hope it didn't) ever happen again?
On Page 39, Dawn is leaving the Barretts' house after a first informal "tutoring" session with Buddy. While Suzi is Dawn's "big helper" by building with Marnie, Dawn and Buddy read Green Eggs and Ham. This scene begins on Page 37.
The first "strike" (imo) against Dawn is that she is downright rude to Buddy himself. Buddy reads, "I...am...same." Dawn interrupts with the reply of. "No, no." "Not 'same.' It's Sam." The session continues. Buddy struggles along, Suzi tries to show off her reading skills, etc.
On Page 39 (at long last--sorry for the lead up delay), Dawn says this to Mrs. Barrett.
"I was reading a little with Buddy today and I think he is having some problems." Dawn goes onto suggest about a BSC Member being Buddy's tutor to which Mrs. Barrett loves the idea.

i forget which book it is, but one of the girls (i'm thinking mallory or MA) is sitting because the mom wants to go to the salon. the sitter says "enjoy your haircut" and the mom corrects her by saying "i'm getting it colored" and whichever sitter it was just said "whatever." ugh, it's killing me that i can't remember specifics but that has always pissed me off. you don't talk to anyone like that, especially if they pay you.

Not to be a Dawn apologist, but it takes talent to be a good teacher. Not everyone has it. Kinda like how Stacey the math queen was never a good tutor to Claudia.
Jessi was an overbearing beast to Jackie R. with his volcano project in Jessi's Baby-sitter.

Now I need to find that, because I remember it too and I was always like, "whoa, did she just say that?" haha

^Whoa who did say that is right? Good point, Sparklymouse. I taught preschool for many years and it wasn't always easy--school age kids too. I felt the above Buddy scene sounded to me exactly the way Oldhickory's haircut comment reads. Dismissive.

There was a client parent/sitter conversation where the mom started to say she was going to get her hair colored and switched the word to "cut" halfway through. I don't remember who it was, but the sitter silently made fun of her slip up. I wonder if that is the same instance as the one you guys are talking about or if Ann thought there was something scandalous about a woman coloring her hair.

It was different; the sitter said "whatever" aloud, not in a mean way, just like "oh, whatever you actually meant." But it still reads as kind of dismissive as there's hardly a way for "whatever" to sound good when that's all you're saying. I wish I could remember who it was! I keep thinking either Mary Anne or Claudia.

I've been thinking about the time that Claudia confronted Mrs. Addison in Claudia and the Sad Goodbye. On one hand, it was pretty nervy of her to come out and say what she did about the kids feeling ignored and wanting more time with their parents.
But, the Addisons were taking advantage of Claudia. They were very late picking up Corrie more than once, without calling to let anyone know, and were not very apologetic about it.
Also, Claudia had just lost Mimi and was still dealing with the emotions surrounding that. So, I think I'm going to give her a pass on this one.

What about when Kristy says (to Rob Feldman), "One false move and I'll punch your lights out!" in #2?
I never liked the "whatever" comment either. Sounds crappy.

in island adventure there is a chapter where stacey and kristy go out with mr pike searching. stacey is panicking and she's yelling about all sorts of dangerous sea animals. when mr pike tells her she probably doesn't have to worry about that, she yells "okay, what about drowning?" i just hate the way it sounds, like she thinks she knows better than he does what could happen.

^You're right Oldhickory, that was rude of Stacey. I thought Mr. Pike was awesome in that scene, too--very clam yet protective of his kids and crew. I wish we had gotten to read about Mrs. Pikes boat. It was times like those when I really loved the Pike family.

I found it!! I found the "whatever" comment. I'm reading Mallory Hates Boys and Gym and it's between Mallory and Mrs. Newton. I feel proud because I thought it was between Claudia and Mrs. Newton--got one of them right I also thought Mrs. Newton was smiling as she corrected her but nope, it goes pretty much like this: “Don’t worry. Enjoy your haircut,” I said.
“Highlighting.”
“Whatever.”Granted, Mal had just had her foot stepped on in gym.

^Mallory's just jealous because Mrs. Newton can change her hair without tricking her parents.
