I apologize if there's already a thread for this but I didn't see one. Mary Anne has two best friends in the series: Kristy and Dawn. Which friendship did you prefer?
I personally liked Kristy and Mary Anne a lot more and was always a bit resentful of the emphasis on Mary Anne and Dawn. MA would say that K was one of her best friends in all the chapter twos but it often wouldn't be shown after that. In fact, even though I didn't care for Kristy in a lot of other ways, I felt the way she did about MA and D.
Plus, MA and D seemed to fight a lot (though a bit understandable given the fact that they shared a house) while I think MA and K fit together better.

I like Kristy and MA better. I like Dawn and MA okay, but I think Kristy and MA have such a strong history.

MA/dawn is NOT a healthy relationship. it started off with MA using dawn to get back kristy, and from then on everything just got way too intense. they way they talk about each other, it's like they are in love or something, not just sisters. and i hate to be the one to say this, but they are stepsisters. they didn't grow up together (even though MA and kristy did), they don't live together, and they have nothing in common besides their parents' marriage. i won't lie and say that kristy is the best friend anyone could ever ask for, but i would certainly choose her over dawn.

Dawn and Mary Anne were codependent and deserved one another. I preferred Kristy with Claudia.

I prefer Mary Anne and Kristy for the reasons you stated, fairy3lf2.

Mary Anne and Kristy have that sort of relationship in which they complete one another. MA's shy, quiet nature is a good match for Kristy's bold tendencies. I think they're a excellent pair. In my opinion, Dawn brings out the bitchiness in Mary Anne much too often.

not just sisters. and i hate to be the one to say this, but they are stepsisters. they didn't grow up together (even though MA and kristy did), they don't live together, and they have nothing in common besides their parents' marriage. I agree! It really annoyed me in Island Adventure when Mary Anne is crying (big surprise) about Dawn etc... being missing. Kristy: Jessi's SISTER is missing. Mary Anne: But so is mine! (Goes back to crying). Maybe it's just me but I hated the fact that Mary Anne acted like her relationship with Dawn was comparable to Jessi and Becca's. They were stepsisters for, what, a few months? And they've known each other for only a year.

The lovey stuff is really over the top in Farewell, Dawn. I've always thought so...Mary Anne staring into the mirror imagining Dawn not there next to her, the long hugs, etc. The MA/Kristy friendship is much easier and more comfortable. Maybe she was so serious about her and Dawn's relationship and put a lot of pressure on it because she wanted it to be that perfect sister bond they had always imagined they'd have.

And they've known each other for only a year. But they were living together as family members. At that point they were sharing all aspects of their lives together. How long must a relationship be held before it's acceptable to consider one family? For example, if something had happened to Emily Michelle, who had been in Kristy's family roughly the same amount of time as Mary Anne and Dawn had been living together, would you say "eh, you've only been living with her a few months and she's your adopted sister anyway"? Or would you be like "OMG, Kristy, I'm so sorry about your sister!"?

Excellent topic! I think Mary Anne is better off with Kristy, it seems to be more of a superficial relationship with Dawn though each one was trying to make it deeper than it was, but something went wrong along the way.

All great points. You guys know what i think. MA/Kristy all the way. Although since we never saw their friendship (mucn anyway) it's hard to tell. I liked the idea of them being bff better than as Sparklymouse said MA/Dawn codependent on one another and imo MA (after a while) not even caring about Dawn anymore but her feeling of entitlement to "have" Dawn to herself. Dawn to make choices to please MA basically.
