When did Rioko first "officially" (in a BSC book) become the head librarian? There was no mention of her being in charge of the Stoneybrook Library when the girls went hunting for witch books in Mary Anne's Bad-Luck Mystery.

They never mentioned it, so I'm guessing right at the beginning of the series.

It might have been in Claudia and Mean Janine. I know it was mentioned there, but I'm not entirely sure if it was the very first time it had ever been brought up.

Thank you Shannon and Candykane. It just seemed weird that it wasn't mentioned in Mary Anne's Bad-Luck Mystery since that was the first time (wasn't it)? that the BSC went to the Library as a group.

I remember Claudia exclaiming that she hated the library in MA's Bad-Luck Mystery. Also, you'd think Claudia would worry about her mom seeing them all there and asking them what they were doing, since they were trying to be all secretive about it.
Didn't the same thing happen in Claudia and the Great Search? Claudia did a bunch of research at the library and somehow never ran into her mom. And none of Mrs. Kishi's co-workers ever said "Hey, I saw Claudia in here today."

^Claudia did say that. Lol, that would have been a weird (but funny for us to read about) moment had Mrs. Kishi or one of her co-workers ran into the girls as they leafed through the witch books. I haven't read "Great Search" in a while so can't say for sure but I would think if Claudia had done so, the "mystery" might have been solved a whole lot quicker and/or been a heck of a lot more fasincating. Imagine, Claudia doing her "research" and feeling anxious and upset. Maybe Ms. Feld spots her, asks her what's worng. Claudia breaks down and tells her or even partly tells her that leads to either Claudia taking off before her mother can be told or having a confrontation with her mom then and there.

It's not all that weird that Claudia didn't run into her mom. A head librarian doesn't come into much contact with the general public on a typical workday, although she would be more likely to in a small town like Stoneybrook than in a big city library. It is kind of weird that she didn't worry about the possibility of running them into her mom in Mary Anne's Bad-Luck Mystery, since it certainly could have happened. Maybe Ann forgot Mrs. Kishi was a librarian?

^When I think "Librarian" I think someone who is always visible to library patrons. I admit to never realizing that Mrs. Kishi probably spent at least a good portion of her workday inside her office as opposed to behind a checkout counter or on the Library floor itself. Also, wasn't the Stoneybrook Library two stories? If it was of any size, it's possible her duties took her to various parts of the building. Still, I find it hard to believe, probably because in my mind Stoneybrook is such a small town. Even though there are many other people who live there, the ones "we know" often feel like they=the town or at least the majority of it. That said, someone, preferably Rioko herself, should have noticed Claud.

^ even though i KNOW she's the head librarian and probably has a lot of logistical work, the fact that mrs kishi could be anywhere besides helping readers find books just blew my mind.

It might have been in Claudia and Mean Janine. I know it was mentioned there, but I'm not entirely sure if it was the very first time it had ever been brought up. Yeah, I'm currently re-reading Claudia and Mean Janine (#7), and in the first chapter (page 6) Claudia writes: Mom is the head librarian at the local public library. This has been a big boon to Janine, who needs books the way most people need food and water.

I believe it. I have yet to meet my head librarian despite volunteering at my library. So not running into her mom is something I never noticed. Although, I did wonder why none of the employees said anything to her mom.
