Poor Mal! I never, ever, thought of the negative possibilties of the nickname Mal--how awful. I do like the name Mallory as a whole though.
The best meaning I can find for my name, Mona, is Gaelic in which it means "Little nobvle One." Otherwise, I was always told "monkey' in Spanish was the main meaning. No, my name is not short for Ramona, Monica, or Monique or anything else for that matter.
I like to try to match characters with appropriate names, too when writing. Though sometimes, I'll name a "bad" or less than desirable character, after a real life person I did not care for or vice versa.

My parents named me Natalie because i was born on Christmas Eve and the name means just that, 'born at Christmas'.... guess i made it easy for them! :-)
