^ I would think so. If it can apply to Jessi, then I'm sure that it can apply to Claudia.

I'm not going to lie... voting for Mary Anne was tempting. However, I voted for Jessi. She's never been one of my favorite sitters, but she did seem very ambitious and legitimately talented when it came to her dancing. Anna would probably be my second choice.

I wouldn't count Claudia's NYC experience because obviously anyone who paid the fee could get in to the class if Mallory was there with her. (Getting praise, too.) I think of Claudia as being very crafty. Crafty people are fun and can make a lot of money selling their work or ideas. But gifted artist? I don't know.
The thing with Stacey and math...I thought she was supposed to be very good at mental math. That's a legit skill to have, and schools should spend more time teaching "real world" math before they move on to other stuff. I just never thought of her as being special even in the math team book. I guess maybe because I think anyone can be taught to get the specific right answer to a math problem, while the performing arts are all about individual interpretation.

I guess maybe because I think anyone can be taught to get the specific right answer to a math problem, while the performing arts are all about individual interpretation. I could see Stacey getting into, like, theoretical math, where they think up crazy problems. I mean, at the foundational levels of math, which I guess are all that are really required in school, sure it's about learning a method and implementing it. But at higher levels it's much more than that. To me, it's akin to saying that language learning or something is just learning a bunch of rules and words. At the beginning level, yes, but it's also so much more. Somebody who can pick up a very difficult language like Chinese easily is still somebody I would consider very intelligent. I don't know, I guess I just have more respect for Stacey and Claudia's talents. Claudia seemed really good at many forms of art and had developed skills for her age. I, for instance, am good at painting and design and conceptual art, but I am terrible at sculpture and things that require more care are more difficult for me. Claudia could do it all!

Stacey wasn't doing higher levels, though. She was doing algebra. Maybe a little geometry. She was still applying basic rules to solve problems. I think she wasn't that awesome based on what she was doing. Maybe she had potential to be a great mathematician someday, but then all the girls had potential to develop their talents to a higher level.

I am fairly certain she would have been doing more advanced stuff if the writers themselves were better at math. She was ranked first in the state!

Competence at higher level math is nothing a person of average intelligence can't acquire so I'm reluctant to say Stacey had abilities no other club member could develop.
As for her taking algebra rather than abstract math courses in eighth grade, there would never have been college level math classes offered at SMS. Maybe if the sitters were in high school, but algebra is about right for advanced eighth grade math.

I think Claudia was the most gifted, she had many art shows and even made her own clothes on a few occasions. I think she designed many pants, which, is not easy to make. lol

I voted for Claudia, as she seemed to have a talent with all artistic things, painting, sculptures, photography and fashion/jewellery design.
Also she had art shows and was recognised by outside teachers as having a natural talent.

Was Mallory actually said to be bad at art or was that just a "bash Mallory" post? I always pictured her as being decent, just not as naturally gifted as Claudia or as serious about it.

^ Mallory was told by the teacher that she was good but she's only eleven, so it's difficult to say whether or not she'll be a great artist and that he didn't think she had Claudia's talent.

The other club members often called Mal a talented writer and illustrator. I have no way of knowing if she was legit good or "OMG, my friend's soooo talented" good. Regarding the NYC class, I did mean that all they had to do to attend was pay a fee. They didn't have to show a portfolio or audition in any way. If that had been the case then, no, I don't think Mallory would have been accepted in. Claudia very well may have been.

Jessi, she seemed to be legittamilty good with her dancing. She did get that dance piece while in Europe. And in super special 9 (staring the bsc) the teacher even said he wanted to give other kids a chance.
