Exactly, Amalia. Also, he might have thought that she'd rebel and start wearing her hair in a perm or chop it off and dye it blue or something - so he kept the braids because they were respectable. Or, well, they were for an eight-year-old, and Richard was probably just out of touch.

After all, Richard was pretty old-fashioned. I don't think it was a matter of being "old-fashioned," it was more of a way of keeping Mary Anne like a little girl and therefore close to him. I think he was afraid that when she grew up, she'd grow apart from him. Lots of parents I know have this struggle. Didn't little girls have to wear braids in the olden days - by the Olden Days, I mean the 1940s-1960s because that was around when Richard was growing up? I think Richard grew up in the late sixties/early seventies, not the fifties. I grew up in the 1980s and saw many girls with braids like Mary Anne and Molly's, so the two-braid style was still common even in the 1970s and 1980s. Even in the 1970s Brady Bunch television series, little Cindy usually wore her hair in two braids. Molly like Mary Anne is so cute! Molly's my favorite American Girl.

The Netflix show tells us that Richard only ever learned how to braid. I can see that being the case with book Richard. He probably has no idea how to do another style.

I wonder why people remember her the most with braids anyway? I mean she only wore them in books 1-3. I guess because everyone’s read at least that far?

I wonder also...I remember Mary Anne the most with her cute bob with bangs. That was one of her best hairstyles and it truly brought out her huge brown eyes.

The hairstyle I remember Mary Anne wearing the most is her unbraided ponytails she wore in many book covers.

Here's another hairstyle I loved on her...loose with bangs... Mary Anne always had wonderful thick, straight dark hair that was so versatile.
