There was a mention of this one in another thread. This is one friggin' long book! I think I read somewhere that it's the longest in the series. I haven't read it in awhile, so I might get the names wrong...I liked the Cates family. Classic case of a new family coming to town and they're only used in one book, but I thought they were interesting, and I liked the dynamic between Ms. Spark (?) and Mr. Cates and the kids. Although the twist at the end, involving the adults, kind of made me go "WTF?" when I was younger...for some reason I didn't think that would be how it turned out. And I forget the name of the fictitious author that was supposed to be Poe's rival, the one that guy Alex was going on about. I love bookstores so it was fun to hear about them fixing up this new place and everything. I also liked how it was raining all the time. The subplot was cute, even if pretty over-used in BSC land. One part I always remember is how they serve coffee to everyone to take their fingerprints...ahh, those enterprising girl detectives Overall, for a later mystery, thought this one wasn't too bad.

I read this one once, and I thought it was long and dull and never read it again. So I really have very little idea as to what this book was about... I do like the cover, though! I might have to reread it.

OMG this book was soooo boring! It took me about 3 days to finish it after I got it in the mail because it was so long and dull (usually I can devour a BSC in about 75 minutes, lol). Pretty much the only thing I got out of this book was a strong desire to go watch the Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons where they do an adaptation of The Raven. ;D But all that BS they went on and on about with Poe and Gable was just, ugh...put me right to sleep. Anyway, I really liked Tom and Gillian...wish we could have seen a bit more of them in other books. I hate when they use throwaway characters like that and we never seen them again.

I just started rereading and this one just doesn't hold my interest. The Poe and Gable stuff does seem to drone on and on and not say much. Tom and Gillian do sound cute and there are a lot of good pizza descriptions, though ;D I am kind of anxious to even see what the "mystery" is as I am only about halfway and don't remember it at all.

Is this also the one where the Pike kids go to the movies to see Star Wars?
*is too lazy to check*

^ Yes. And then they go afterwards to Pizza Express and are really wild the whole time. That is one of my favorite parts ;D

I have mixed feelings about this one. It's okay, but it's a cop-out mystery, and a bit too long without being really good. That being said, it's not terrible. I loved the Pike-sitting chapter, since Alan Gray makes an appearance and makes fun of Claudia. Hee.

Yeah aren't they throwing popcorn the whole time they're at the movie? That makes them sound like the type of people I would want to kill if they were in the same theater as me. ;D

^ ;D I thought the same thing. Also loved the part about Alan. Just finished this one and didn't get into it any more than usual. For some reason, I just can't seem to keep the whole "mystery" straight in my mind. It seems to go on and on but not really go anywhere (if that makes any sense). The fingerprinting thing (though I doubt it would have really worked) brought back memories of when I tried one of these kits during my "spying" and detective days ;D

Yeah there's not much of a mystery in this mystery. ;D The one thing I liked about it was it gave a great atmosphere for reading during a storm or something, since it's always raining in the book.

^ Agree that I like the atmosphere, too. That's when I read it when I did ;D I don't know why it seems so confusing and drawn out. Not a great subplot, either.

Hey aln, I went through a detective phase, too! My best friend and I were obsessed with spying and being detectives for years. We even had a detective agency. We did finger-printing a lot, but it didn't always work. I think my years-long detective phase is partly responsible for why I love the BSC mysteries so much!
I think I like the second part of the book better, when there's more of a "mystery." I liked the tomb in the basement (if you can call it that). I guess the story picked up a bit in the second half of the book, but maybe I'm imagining things.
I didn't like the professor character. For some reason she reminded me a bit of Professor Trelawney from Harry Potter. But she seemed to only really be there to provide the BSC with another suspect.

The beginning is boring, but overall I like it and enjoy re-reading it. Not many people seem to like it!
