Cool, definitely sounds BSC-ish.

Sort of. I still think at least one BSC charge should have been a huge fan of the Scott Corbett "Trick" Books. The 12 books in that series centers on 2 (8-10, I never figured out their ages) year old boys and their adevntures thanks to an eccentric, but very friendly witch, Mrs. Graymalkin. I know this is really stretching it from MA and the Haunted Bookstore so if anyone wants more info I can post in the book thread.

zoar, that is the weirdest thing. I loved those books and read them in elementary school but hadn't thought of them in years, until about three weeks ago for some reason a conversation with my roommate led to me trying to describe the books to him and search the internet for used copies, and then here they are coming up again.

^That's awesome Scrounge, I've never met anyone who has heard of them. I actually have 10 of the 12 books and have been looking for the other 2. If you ever want to talk about the books pm me.

This one was one of the later mysteries that was okay for me. I just wanted to point out one thing... I know this is already discussed a lot, but boy, this is the book that made me REALLY sit up and notice the exaggerated age difference thing! BSC does it all the time, but still, sometimes I just handwave it away but for some reason, with this book, I couldn't ignore it...
Tom Cates had his own suspicions about his dad and Ms. Sparks having a thing going on, which I thought was kind of a nice touch that he was the one who realized it... I could just be generalizing, but it seems like something that might go over the head of most little kids. Then I remembered that he was supposed to be ten. Then I remembered that Mal and Jessi are eleven.

The BSC should star in the movie "13 going on 30"...

ITA about MA on the cover. The other thing, is this book keeps talking about the rain and how cold it is. If that is true, then why in all heck is MA wearing a skimpy cami tank top?! ^ I just assumed that that's what she wore underneath her jacket. As for this book, I really liked it. It alluded to an actual ghost! Mary Anne saw it as she and her dad drove away in the end. And also, she won the prize in the end when she didn't even enter! I wondered how the driveway was left "looking like a rainbow" after the Sun Day Festival? I don't remember them doing any activity that would've left that look.

The BSC should star in the movie "13 going on 30"... Haha! It shoudl be the other way around I like this one too! Stacey and the Mystery of Stoneybrook had an actual ghost too right?

^ Probably not. A lot of the things they saw and heard had a logicial explanation to them. A couple of the more far out things they saw was probably their imagination getting the better of them.

^Don't forget "Old Rubbernose!" Wasn't that the name of the "ghostly" character who was after the affections of some lady in Mr. H's story.

^ Yes, it was. The lady rejected him, so he vowed to search for a woman that will love him despite his disfigurement.

I liked this book! But it did leave me thinking that it would have been a great book for Mallory to narrate. I know Mary Anne is often mentioned as liking to read, but overall Mal seems more passionate about books and authors, so I think this would have been a good opportunity for her to have another mystery. I think I would have even enjoyed Dawn or Claudia narrating instead, as they are passionate about ghosts/ghost books and mystery books, respectively, and Mary Anne doesn't seem to me to have that kind of passion that Mal, Dawn or Claud have.
This is another book that I think has aged too fast. The idea of opening a small independent bookstore seems like a very unwise business venture nowadays, and the idea of opening one that carries only one genre? Wouldn't that have been ridiculous even back when this book was published? I guess the reason the Cates were never mentioned again is because the bookstore must have gone out of business within a month.

I know that I definitely have this one in the back of the cupboard somewhere, but I know that this is about the only BSC book that I owned and never finished. For some reason I could just never get into this one as a kid. I might have to try and dig it out again one day and have another go.

Ooooh, I never thought about this being a possible Mallory book, but yeah....that would have worked. I don't know about Claudia, though. She liked mysteries and Nancy Drew and all that, but I think Mal would have appreciated the experience beyond that.
