Yeah, that's definitely a factor. Plus remember that neither Mallory nor Mary Anne had a clue about the Dance NY offer.

It really annoyed me that things happened like that. I really wish they would have written Jessi off to Dance NY. I mean obviously she was super talented b/c she always got the leading roles (insert eye roll). I think it would been a better end to her character than the actual end.

Yeah, it could have given her and Mallory more of a final ending. After all, the club disbands and Jessi leaves anyway. So who is she hanging out with now? "Bad Babysitter" Wendy?
Also, did it annoy anyone else that Jessi got up at 5:29am (or whatever) EVERYDAY to practice? As Claudia would say, "Oh my lord!" That's pretty unrealistic for an 11 year old. Maybe it's just me and I love my sleep.

^I don't quite buy that Jessi got up (and on her own, supposedly without the aid even of an alarm) every morning at that hour. Remember, despite not being allowed to sit at night (outside her own family), this 11 year old, took dance classes at least twice a week, probably also had at least 2 baby-sitting jobs a week, was Squirt's 3rd mom? all in addition to school and her regular life. When did she, or any of them really, have any down-time? They didn't (not much anyway).
ETA, what I should have said originally, thanks for the reminder Anzuhana. I believe a few times Jessi made the point of stating that while she set her alarm, her body knew to wake up before it went off. I do remember her one time also saying that her mom woke up every day to check on her but that neither admitted that fact to the other.

^ Jessi did have an alarm clock but it went off at 5:30 am and she woke up a minute earlier. I don't remember what book she says that, though.

^ It's mentioned in many books, actually. Especially the ones narrated by Jessi herself (But also Mal ones).

^Heaven forbid! Certainly there was no reason for Mrs. Stevenson to want to invite anyone herself either. IIRC, Abby specifically thanked everyone for coming to the Stevenson Family Chanukkah Party as opposed to just her (A's) party. Lol really. Abby might as well have invited them to her Hanukkah party since they were all her friends! I don’t know much about Abby’s extended family, but do the Stevensons have any relatives nearby that would attend a Hanukkah Party? I edited to add in that I, too, was ANNOYED by Jessi's handwriting? How come she gets to narrate so many Super Specials or Mysteries? Her writing must be the hardest to read and the least likely for an 11-year-old. I think Jessi narrates so many because she doesn’t play much of a role in the mysteries and narrating gives her more presence. Because really, what does Jessi actually do in this one? The misfortune just falls on us because we have to read these notebook entries in her handwriting.

I just finished re-reading for some Christmas in August cheer. I had a harder time getting into the book this time, and really there are way too many storylines. I say that having skipped (I usually do) the Stacey and Claudia parts as those are just too creepy and also sad for me. I much prefer to read about Baba the lamb I wish the pageant had been more of a focus perhaps in place of the NY stuff. I would have loved reading more of the pageant live and thought it was awesome that probably a majority of the BSC charges did participate. I had also recently read Karen's Angel where Hannie and Linny put together a pageant every year for their immediate neighborhood so it was cool to so soon after read a BSC version of that. My favorite storyline is definitely the pageant and also Mary. I love that she named her son Nicholas, too, fitting since he was probably born on Tuesday night December 23rd in the book. I say this because of Santa=St. Nicholas. Andrew mystery, I mentioned up-thread. I realized perhaps he also stayed with the Papadakises along with Shannon the dog. Though if he had, I would hope so, too, would have Karen, David Michael, Emily and either Nannie, Watson, or Elizabeth. There was no need for all of them to stay with Abby and her family. Back to Summer and August, though with increasing heat expected next week, perhaps I should read a few more wintry books!

I just finished this one recently and liked it a lot (much more than my last comment). I guess I'm in the minority here because I enjoyed all of the different sub-plots; I felt the sitters individually were more involved this time around. Stacey and Claud got their own mystery; Mallory had the missing woman and Jessi helped discover her while Mary Anne helped in the end when she was in labour; the other sitters had the burglaries. Although it made me think about mental illness as the gardener and Cybil definitely had some issues.
I LOVE "It's beginning to look a lot like dangerrr!" it's so corny it's so good!

I must read this one soon!
Funny seeing this post of mine because a co-worker recently had her baby boy and his middle name is Nicholas! She was supposed to be due on the 21st.

Still offended by Mary Anne on the cover 24 years later. Although Abby and Kristy, as well as the setting overall, look good so I can somewhat forgive that. But sweaters and shirts with that stripe pattern around the middle and down the sleeves were extremely popular around the time of publication. Abby's outfit and Kristy's outfit are somewhat timeless because they could both work, fashion wise, even today.
"It's beginning to look a lot like ... danger!" is still one of my favourite taglines.
Out of the three subplots my favourite this time around was the burglaries in the Thomas-Stevenson neighbourhood. However, as mentioned before, I do like how each character was somehow involved with a storyline and had some type of significant presence. The three storylines at least was organized efficiently. I do have vivid memories of receiving this and reading it when it first came out.

I owned this one and definitely read it but I remember almost nothing. Except the girl stalking Stacey and the pregnant woman with amnesia.
I agree with Mary Anne on the cover. Those sweaters were definitely popular at the time and I think I owned one. And I know baggy clothes were in (and are apparently coming back). But it looks so...boxy on her?

I discovered recently that my library has all of the bsc books available for ebook check out in the libby app so I've been reading all the Christmas ones lately. I don't think I ever read this one before.
It seemed random that Jessi and Mallory were all of a sudden attending the same church and their siblings plus a bunch of other kids were in a nativity play together. They never mentioned this church before or since IIRC. Just another inconsistency in BSC world.
Claire and her love for Baba the stuffed lamb was adorable and relatable. My youngest child is Claire's age and she has two stuffed cats who are constantly with her and she'll have a meltdown if White Kitty or Pixie Whiskers is missing just Claire did when she couldn't find Baba.
The scene with Dawn and Hannie Papadakis after the burglary was sweet. Kristy thinking the bsc could solve the crime was not. Helping her neighbors with cleaning up and babysitting was plenty. Why did Kristy think she could get involved with solving a robbery? That's the cops job not a nosy teenager's job.
