fred looks a whole lot like the count from sesame street. He does! I agree with the earlier posts that it was strange Claudia suspected Jerry. I thought even stranger Janine suspected Jerry. Is he really that shifty?

I’ve just read this one for the first time - the main story was okay, nothing special, but I really enjoyed the Claudia and Janine rivalry! There’s a different ghostwriter for this one (peter Lerangis, most of the mysteries are by Ellen Miles) and it shows; I think Peter portrayed Claudia’s character really well and I love the parts where she’s talking to herself. But my favourite part is the silent duel between and Claudia and Janine over Steve - can’t understand what they see in him but their actions are fun to read about!

I read this one recently and had to ask, what was with that voice they heard? Like is there some actual supernatural stuff going on in Stoneybrook?
Anyway, I really like this book. The Claudia and Janine silent fight over Steve was kind of funny. Plus it’s nice to see Mrs. Martinez again from that Mary Anne mystery. The history about the lighthouse was interesting too.
The comet stuff was a little annoying though.

No wonder I hate this one. It's ghost written by PL. And as someone living in Australia (don't ever call me an Australian just cos I live here. I'm actually from New Zealand) and I've never ever heard someone say "throw shrimp on the barbie". We don't have shrimp here it's called prawns.

This one is kind of a mess, but has good points.
The Hatts staying with the Kishis is kind of weird. I don't love how John and Ryoko spring this news on Claudia and Janine 2 days before it happens. That's crazy. 9 people living in an average-sized (for Stoneybrook) is just crazy, even temporarily. I guess the room arrangement makes sense, but it is a LOT to ask of them on such short notice. I kind of don't blame Claudia for daydreaming about running away lol.
For the most part, the Hatts' stay is kind of uncomfortable to read about. I guess it just feels so stressful. Laura has no redeeming qualities. For some reason, she seems to make fun of Claudia a lot (I guess she gets a point for not ratting her out about the candy?) and is otherwise just a pill. The Bathroom-Sitters Club scene is hilarious, though, and definitely the highlight of the book.
Janine is so OOC here. I don't buy her cheating on Jerry, and she just acts so different than normal. It really feels to me that she should just break up with him; based on this book, I don't even understand why they're together. Janine is probably my favorite BSC sibling by this point, and she definitely doesn't seem like Janine in this book.
The actual mystery is actually pretty intriguing at first. When I read that Mr. Hatt was accused of killing Adrian, I was shocked! It feels pretty dark for the BSC. Claud being afraid of living with a potential murderer is pretty wild. The creepy magazine letters they get just feels so classic BSC to me.
I don't like the conclusion, though. They didn't even have to solve the mystery really, they just happened to find the guy (who wasn't originally a suspect aside from the old photo they found) who confessed. Meh... at least they weren't recapping what happened at a meeting.
I kind of liked the subplot for some reason. The kids' fears of the comet spreading flu germs and killing all plants was kind of funny. I like the kids' realistic, underwhelmed reactions to seeing the comet. I probably would've thought the same, not realizing how special the event really was. I like how Claudia is mesmerized by it. Not a great subplot, but not bad either.
I like how it's left ambiguous as to whether the lighthouse is actually haunted or not. This book does a pretty good job at the spooky scenes.
