^ I'm guessing there wasn't a lot available....it's not like they knew they were going to be there and planned for a slumber party or something.

If you've read the book, you know "the junk" wasn't even a possibility that night.

^Yeah, if you haven't read the book, there really isn't much you can contribute to the conversation.

I liked reading the descriptions about the mansion and when they went exploring. I wouldn't mind exploring an empty mansion. I agree with what everyone posted about Dorothy.

WTF was wrong with Dorothy? Her fiance wasted his entire freaking life pining for her and she's just like, "Haha, maybe I'll go say hi!" I hope that when she shows up, he snaps and kills her. total word. domestic violence is never the answer, but homegirl will get what's coming to her. normally i don't care for charlie too much, and i can't stand karen, but they are both really likeable in this book. there is one part early on where karen drags her sleeve across her face to dry her tears, and i just melted. i wanted to give her a hug! my big sister instincts were kicking in, i guess. charlie was great too. the kids really loved him, and i thought it was sweet that he really ran the show that night. i think a lot of the krashers parents owed him a huge thank you. did anyone else think it was weird that the pikes dropped MA off at her house, so that she could change into dry clothes and WALK back to their house? were they really in such a hurry that they couldn't wait for her to grab a change of clothes and ride back with them?

Just read this one for the first time and thought it was pretty good. I too was really shocked with Dorothy at the end....poor Will keeping the house in order and hurting over losing her all those years ago while she just went on with things, wow! Oh, there was actually one more Wizard of OZ mention. When Kristy first got home and jumped on her bed she said all she could think of was the line "there's no place like home"...... maybe GW Ellen Miles was also obsessed with the movie.

^ I don't totally hate Dorothy for doing things the way she did. All she did was decide not to marry someone who wasn't right for her, move on with her life, and decide that reconnecting with that person might be fun after years and years. Granted, running away and faking her death was probably not the best way to go, but I can't blame her for feeling like she needed to do something drastic to escape. I actually think it was a little silly of Will not to move on like Dorothy did...

I don't "totally hate" her either, especially because from her pov it did sound like her married life (at that time) might be very limiting. However, I did think letting both Will and her Dad to believe she had died was just plain wrong (to be very polite). It would have been very interesting to have read about their reunion. I wouldn't have blamed Will one bit had he either shunned the idea or been extremely angry from the getgo upon hearing from Dorothy. If they did meet, I hope it brought him some peace. As for his not moving on for the next 40? 50? years (I forgot how old they were), that was a little over the top. Although maybe Will felt like he was responsible for what happened to both Dorothy and Owen Sawyer and simply never got over it....

I agree zoar, I think letting the men in her life think she was dead was wrong. You can never predict how the lives of others will be affected by a choice you make. Dorothy may have thought her father would go on to live a long life -- he didn't. She may have thought Will would have eventually picked up the pieces and moved on -- clearly he didn't. It was all very sad.

I am about to re-read and just went through this thread first. I never realized all the WoO references in terms of even "Dorothy" being named after a main Ozzie. That is not one of my favorite movies but neither is "Lucy" for tv. Will didn't have a phone at his house did he? I know the mansion didn't. I still find it so hard to believe that despite the storm neither Watson (or any parents) or the police tried to find the Krashers. Also, it always struck me as odd that Bart's Dad calls Claudia in this one. I enjoyed the Krasher parts but wish the "mystery" had been better developed and most definitely we had gotten to read about Dorothy and Will's meeting.
Editing to add: Andrew went to the Redfield game with his mom and Seth. I'm guessing it was a "Little House" weekend? (Watson was not there). I can totally see how Karen finagled her way into riding to the game with the team but wouldn't it have made sense (especially because of the impending storm) for her to have gone home with Lisa and Seth? I understand that she wanted to celebrate the win on the ride home, just odd it was not mentioned.

^I always thought it was strange too that Karen didn't go home with them. Nicky went home with his parents so that would have made sense.
I love love love how Claudia gets tie-dyed and Janine is asking about the chemical properties to figure out a way for it to come out...hehehe
I almost wish that we would not have found out the sewing lady was Dorothy. It sort of infuriates me that this lady ruined everyone's life by just peacing out. I mean I wasn't alive back then so maybe you couldn't just speak your mind, but you could've at least sent a letter saying "Hey, I'm not dead just want to be by myself" or something like that. If I were will, I would tell her to F-off. She did say her life was lonely at times, well good!

^Nodding, Lisa or Seth should have told Karen the same thing. I loved the tie-dyed part, too.
I never thought of it that way, but you're right. I wonder if the BSC ever asked Dorothy if she had contacted Will? I mean if they found out she hadn't, maybe, they'd do so? I could also see Karen sending back the picture with a comment that she hopes Will be happier having re-met Dorothy or something to that effect. Yep, I was not a Dorothy fan at all. If she wanted an "out" of the impending marriage, she should have told Will so. Perhaps, she and/or at some point along with Will could have done some traveling first, even checked out opportunities for her to work. Wow, I just had this thought. We know Patrick Thomas is a deadbeat to end all deadbeats. He was a true jerk. His reasons for "leaving" were that he wasn't "cut out to be a family man and couldn't handle being tied down." (Weren't they)? Isn't that, to a lesser extent, what Dorothy did?! Only Patrick's actions were labeled as "wrong" (as darn well they should have been) by the BSC, but Dorothy's were understood.

True true! But look at how Dorothy is portrayed...the sweet old lady with a sewing store who is always so nice. UGH! What strikes me as odd, why couldn't she travel and see the world? Obv her dad had money, so she could have done that! It was her choice to tell Will she wanted to marry him! I guess I will just never understand a time when women couldn't make their own decisions. Thank the lord that has changed

^Thank goodness those times have changed is right! Very true about her Dad having the money to fund a trip for her. She could have at least asked him for some financial help to do so. Maybe she could have even gotten work to make it happen herself.

Maybe even asked for a trip around the world as a honeymoon? The best of both worlds! I hope she sleeps at night curled up alone next to a thimble!
