Okay, I just mentioned this in the anime thread and had to bring it here.
Did anyone else think the "arrangement" between Mr. Halpern and Cary sounded...potentially dirty? I dunno, I keep thinking that Cary has to do certain, uh, "favors" for him in exchange for his own space in the basement...

^ I thought the same thing. If not dirty, definitely creepy. This is one of the reasons Cary gives me the creeps.....

Even though it was wrong for Alan to steal the Valentine grams, I was actually kind of glad he did because I thought it served those kids right. I really felt for him in this one. I have a sensitive spot for this type of thing, anyway, because I was friends with a group of girls who thought it was just “normal” behavior to treat boys like that – making them think that you liked them while laughing at them. I saw how many guys that crushed so could relate to what Alan went through. Cary with the “raised eyebrow” and “special arrangement” creeped me out as always. ;D I love this mystery, probably because of the good memories it brings back about selling Valentine grams at my school in 6th grade (though it was quite boring ;D) I also really like the subplot because it just gives me a “good” feeling. I think this is one of my favorite mysteries, even though (or maybe because ;D) it doesn’t deal with anything dangerous.

^ This one is definitely worth it. I think it's one of my favorite mysteries. ;D As for the subplot (in case you haven't read it but are curious about that ;D) the kids are feeling bad about Valentine's Day for various reasons and the sitters arrange a party for them and show them that Valentine's Day can be fun. Kind of how I feel sometimes.

I read this one today, while I was waiting in traffic. I liked it, it had lots of fun non bsc interaction. It was totally obvious that Alan took the valentines, I don't knwo why they even tried to misdirect that. Also, it kind of made me sad for valentine's day -- I hope no one in Alaska makes a big deal about it, because it makes me sad when I am single. I liked how Cary had an arrangement with the janitor, that made me lol. It also made me think of "freedom writers" where some kids stayed in the school after hours by talking with the janitor.

I just read this one for the first time, and I honestly had no idea who took the bag until Stacey confronted Cary in the basement. For a second, I wondered if the girl Alan liked might have been Claudia, but she wasn't involved in the joke grams. Speaking of, why in the world would middle schoolers, who probably don't have that much money (unless they're BSC members), spend it on fake grams? Something about Cary in this one reminds me very much of Chuck Bass on Gossip Girl. I wonder how they'd get along....

You're so right! There are so many parallels between Chuck Bass and Cary Retlin. I seriously might do a blog post on it (and give you credit for the idea, of course:))
Stacey's outfit is cute on the cover.
The valentine grams cost a dollar. I also imagine Stoneybrook kids getting fairly decent allowances, since Stoneybrook residents get baby-sitters for every little thing. In addition, we know that Stoneybrook small business owners have lax hiring practices, and would allow 13-year-olds to work as busboys and at the department store Kid Center, so perhaps some of the students have part-time jobs.

^ Good point about the illegal hiring situation. The ONLY time they ever mentioned labor laws was in "Stacey's Problem"...a couple of books before the end of the series.

1. When Justin Price, that sixth-grader, is writing out his valentine-gram, Stacey notes that Mal is in his math class and wonders if he might have a crush on her. ?? Why do her thoughts immediately go to Mal? It could be anybody, and besides, Mal and Ben write each other v-grams anyway.
2. Stacey thinks asking Robert if he stole the bag will be easy because he "is not a good liar and has never been able to lie to me." WHAT. I think I remember a time, Stace, when he was sneaking around with Andi and you didn't know. Emily Bernstein and Claudia had to tell you, remember that?
3. Mary Anne is the first to suggest they might suspect Pete. What is Mary Anne's obsession with him?
And because I think everyone should read this charming quote from Kristy:

^ Now I am picturing Edward and Bella gazing into each other's eyes, not even noticing when Boo-Boo comes along and throws up a half-digested mouse at their feet.

I've finished reading this book and agree that it is one of the better mysteries and I also felt bad for Alan.
