Now I finally know where the infamous "I licked the brown dog" came from! I'd hate to have been driving the same make and color of car as the suspicious green one and maybe have the BSC think I was a dognapper. I thought it was funny how when the BSC were checking things out Claudia kept getting distracted and wanted to draw the beach.

Gotta admit that I loved the Maine Coon cat shout-out when Dawn, Mary Anne and Kristy arrive at the pet store and Mary Anne notices (and admires them). I got a Maine Coon kitten (born May 2nd) at the beginning of the summer. I named her Margo - inspired by Margo Pike and because I always liked that name - and also because of the M-factor. Maine Coon. Margo.
Anyway, that part made me smile. She's gonna be a big girl!

i just read this one for the first time, and i can't say i hate it. but here wer go. 1. i'm amazed that the mancusis weren't pissed at dawn. if dawn were sitting for a kid, the parents wouldn't have let her off so easily. i've dog-sat before, and it's pretty obvious that you don't leave an animal alone outside, even tied up. cleaning up the guinea pig cage was not an emergency and could have waited until cheryl was ready to come back inside. 2. in live from wsto, dawn goes on a long spiel at the very beginning about kristy chewing with her mouth open. dawn says something like "who wants to see you chewing up murdered mammals? do you know what they do to cows in slaughterhouses?" so i don't buy the whole thing about not feeling sorry for cows. this was just sloppy work. 3. somebody already said this, but the picture of mallory on the cover was terrible :] and finally, 4. at the end of the book, the girls prepare to have their picture taken for the paper. in baby sitters beware, they talk about how the picture was published but some of the faces were cut out. does anybody know which book it is when the paper actually comes out? since i read beware first i knew the picture didn't turn out right and i was expecting them to say something about it at the end of this book, but of course they never did.

Well, I am only on page 30 of this book and I have to say so far am horrified by this book. =) I usually ignore the unbelievability of some of the books...but leaving dogs alone for a weekend just makes me want to scream out loud. You just don't do that...I got two boys who are a handful and would never leave them in the house with only someone checking in on them now and then. I can see with cats, when we go out for a weekend we have someone drop by once a day, but the dogs we board. oh dear...I can see for the sake of a storyline but couldn't she have been a temp. dog walker or something with the owners home? And the fact that the dog had a rawhide toy...alone with a dane is a HUGE choking hazard. And Danes are prone to twisted stomachs...oh I could go on...heeheehee. I do enjoy the reptiles though, glad to see some other pets besides hamsters, I have a huge heart for snakes and stuff, love em so glad to see some diversity. (althoug poor Dawn, since snakes eat rats and mice I hope she had the heart to feed them if necessary. I would have loved to see a scene about feeding snakes...=)
I do wonder at all the pet owners in Stoneybrook. All cats are outdoors, (Mine are indoor and would never let them outside, especially in a crowded neighborhood. I can see though if you live on a farm or out in the country). Mary Ann letting who kitten outside is unreasponsiblle, and dangerous. Dawn also irritates me beyond belief. But I never really liked her. =)

I didn't like it, either, since there are people who don't eat meat because of animal welfare.
I felt bad for the owners since they didn't know whether or not they'd get their pets back. Mallory does look horrible on the cover.

^I agree with you Dee - there are some terrible pet parents in Stoneybrook!
I just read this one and it makes me so sad. If someone stole my cats, I would hurt them! I mean no one would want my crazy cats, but .....
I did love the end with all the pets being reunited. I liked that David Michael had more of a personality in this one albeit he was just sad and depressed, but it was nice for him to have a bigger part for once. Thank goodness Karen and her fake concern over Shannon to get attention wasn't included in this one.
I wished the Krashers had been in a different book, one that could have focused on Kristy and Bart coaching together etc. I would have been interested in seeing how they worked together and how that might have changed their relationship.

Is it supposed to be Bo, Pow, and Shannon on the cover? If so, we now "know" Bo is a smallish brown (sweet-looking) dog. I remember we had this discussion about Bo's breed somewhere else. I think this mystery marks the start of the BSC becoming "Police Women." I really don't like how extra patronizing Dawn is in this. At least she decided against "starting trouble" by pointing out that Richard and Mary Anne who claimed not to be hungry for tofu were able to gobble down Sharon's fruit pie.

I know this thread is from awhile ago but the Krashers are a big part of the plot in mystery #9, Kristy and the Haunted Mansion - they travel to an away game and get caught in a storm/have to spend the night in a "haunted" mansion.

I'm surpised that I don't like this one more. I'm a dog person, so I should be into it. I've always found it kind of boring, though. I DO like the part where they're at the pet store and Dawn names all the kinds of dogs she sees. That's totally something I'd do!

I never realized before last night just how long Cheryl was left outside. Dawn sure took an awfully long time doing other chores that as others have mentioned could have waited. I am guessing the Mancusis don't have a fenced in back yard? If not, another "strike" against them in terms of not being the best pet parents. If they did surely Dawn could have let all three out. Mancusis would have had every right to be upset with her. I also didn't like how she and even other sitters seemed more concerned with wanting verification from Kristy that David Michael must be upset over Shannon than helping to find Shannon. IMO, asking that was totally un-necessary and somewhat rude. But then, I'm not a fan of this book at all so maybe it was just something "new" that struck me the wrong way this time around.

I feel like this book was a turning for the mystery series web it goes from cute little non threatening - Janine borrowed my sweater into bsc policewomen!
I felt awful for all the pets. This again did not help me get any love for dawn!

Does anyone else think that this would have made a better Kristy book, whereas Haunted Mansion could have been better suited for Dawn? After all, we do have the big Krashers sub-plot in this one.
Despite the horrific Mallory on the cover, and the Vanessa that looks similar to the little actress on the TV show, there were some cute moments to this book. Like when Mary Anne offered to have Tigger stay with David Michael for a few days to cheer him up. Or when David Michael points out Claud's horrific spelling on the poster.

^That is interesting and and something I never thought about Virgo. I wonder if this was a Dawn book to "prove" that while she didn't like animals or pets she was helpful at solving a mystery about them? As a Kristy book, we might have gotten to read more about her family and less about Dawn having to be in charge of the searches. :'/ We might have also gotten a sweet Louie memory, Even as a Mary Anne book this might have been more pet-centered. I also loved when MA offered to loan Tigger to David Michael. She definitely did something super sweet there. Haunted Mansion I did like as a Kristy book because of the Bashers introductions, I just wish they had been seen again. If it had been a Dawn book, maybe the adventure might have inspired her to "remember" to further investigate the Jared Mullray mystery. Yes, I still do wish that had been better developed.

You know, I think you're right, Virgo! Kristy's the dog person and Dawn's the ghost person...it would have fit better.
