Chapter Fifteen:
It was Friday evening. There were only two hours till Sam would pick Mary Anne up. Mary Anne fumbled around her bedroom, wondering what to wear. It had be perfect if she wanted to impress Sam.
At last, Mary Anne decided to wear a black, scoop-necked blazer with gold trim over a white peasant blouse, a blue demin above-the-knee skirt over white tights, and a pair of basic black high heels. She posed herself in front of her floor-length mirror. I look good, Mary Anne thought to herself. But something is missing.
Aha! Mary Anne could definitely use some jewelry. After fishing around in her jewelry box, Mary Anne slipped on a gold pearl necklace, a gold pearl bracelet, and clipped on gold pearl earrings (she still didn't have pierced ears--and never will). But Mary Anne changed her mind. She took her jewelry off and clipped on big, flashing, dangling earrings shaped like parrots (Claudia gave them to Mary Anne for Christmas). Mary Anne figured that consertative clothing + flashy jewelry = a totally awesome outfit.
Mary Anne tied her brown hair into a sophisticated bun with a hair bow shaped like a parrot. Then she carefully applied a tiny amount of eyeliner, a bit of mascara, a small hint of blush, some concealer, and a streak of tannish-pink lipstick. She even put on sparkly eyeshadow (just a little bit of it).
"There," Mary Anne posed herself in the mirror. "I look...okay. At least okay enough for Sam."
Mary Anne thundered down the stairs to the living room. Mr. Spier was watching the evening news, sitting stiffly on the couch. When Mary Anne stepped into the living room, her father gasped.
"Mary Anne, is that you?" Mr. Spier cried.
"Yes," Mary Anne replied, beaming with pride.
"You look beautiful," Mr. Spier complimented.
"Thanks, Dad," Mary Anne was still smiling.
Just then the door bell rang.
"Oh, that must be Sam!" Mary Anne exclaimed. " 'Bye, Dad, I'll be home by eleven thirty, okay?"
"Have fun, Mary Anne," Mr. Spier gave his daughter a kiss on the cheek. "I love you and please be careful."
"I will, I will, I will."
"Don't talk back to me."
"I'm NOT."
"All right..." Mr. Spier sighed, used to Mary Anne's hormones. After all, she was almost six weeks pregnant.
Mary Anne picked up her purse and hurried to the door. She flung the door open and cried,"Hi, Sam!"
But it wasn't Sam. It was Logan Bruno, Mary Anne's ex-boyfriend.
