I remember in Claudia and Phantom Phone Calls about how they were so deathly afraid of the burglar on the loose. What turned them into such fearless detectives in the first place? ghostwriters?

I think it was pretty bad in Jessi and the Dance School Phantom that Jessi was actually afraid of being physically harmed but still wouldn't tell her parents because she didn't want them to be worried. ^ Yeah, I know!

I never thought about it much til I came on here either. Although, I haven't read many mysteries yet, so if I'd read some of them, I may have wondered.

There are a few where I just can't believe that they don't tell anyone. If I ever baby-sat, and if someone sent me a threatening letter or flowers with the flower cut off, or whatever other creepy thing that Mr X does, I probably would call the police. Also, there is NO way I would have let that kid just go home after he terrorized us. I probably would have trapped him in the secret passageway and called the police, saying that someone had broken into my home.
If someone was cutting up my dance clothes? I think I would have reported it. To the teacher, my parents, a security guard at the dance studio, someone. If I opened a letter that I didn't recognize and fingernail clippings fell out? I think I would have told my parents. I just don't get it. I know it's necessary for the plot for them to solve the stuff on their own, but I just don't get why the only time I can remember a serious conversation involving the parentals was in "Keep Out Claudia". I mean, there are ample opportunities to show pre-teens about safety and stuff.

^ Agree with everything you said. Some of the stuff that happened to them was downright scary and I don't see how involving the parents would have taken that much away from the plot. I think it actually would have created more opportunities.

Yes, lots of scary stuff went down...it reminds me of the Sweet Valley High TV series where Elizabeth and Jessica's parents were always completely absent, even, I think, when Jessica got kidnapped and tied up in a complete psycho's house. I was never a HUGE Sweet Valley fan, though, so I don't know if there was ever a reason given for the parents never being there.

^Makes me think of the SVU arc at the beginning where Jessica and Steven get married and go through all kinds of stuff while their parents are conveniently on a cruise. ;D I guess they are adults in college at that time but it's so "convenient" for the parents to be gone. ;D

Well in the book SVH Ned and Alice were always (almost) there, and in SVU they were there for Steven's almost wedding, but had no idea about Jess'... obnly cause she didn't tell them. They were on the cruise when Steven got shot though.

^ I think that's the time I'm talking about. The first 9 or so were the only ones I read in that series.

yeah, some of the regular series is like that too. But, I think its an appealing thing for young children to read a hero their age (or older) who can handle things and fix things. Just look at Harry Potter and his friends, they started at 11 years doing stints that should not have been attempted by children. Didn't Oprah do a special on the dangers of the BSC? I remember my mom becoming suddenly concerned and reading some BSC books outloud with me, Claudia and the Perfect Boy, and Super Special 1. She also read Karen's Bully and Karen's Threemusketeers with me as well. Nothing really happened, I guess she noticed that some of the concepts were too deep for my childness at the time. :3 Reading them now makes me go OMG dude guys whats wrong with you!!! ?? But yeah, it is like an empowerment thing for kiddies and i'd much rather have BSC type empowerment than Spongebob or Rocket Power or Fairy Oddparents or Dexter's Lab. Those 'heros' are downright rude spoiled brat children and everyone is so nasty and negative.

Oprah did a bsc special?!
Aside from rocket power, the shows you mentioned are unrealistic. Bsc comes off as quite realistic, so i think it's more "dangerous" in that sense.

I don't see anything wrong with Fairly oddparents or spongebob. I mean, yeah, the shows are silly and obnoxious, but I don't think the characters are a bad example. Spongebob is a sponge who talks in the ocean and works with his friend. Kids like him because he is colorful and makes bad jokes. The kid on Fairly Oddparents has Fairy Godparents. WHO hasn't wanted to have magical beings to watch over you and grant wishes while you go on magical journeys? It's also colorful and exciting and I don't know how it's negative. They have a message that is usually positive, like "be careful what you wish for"
Of course, I could just be comparing it to other kids shows that are absurd. Like Bratz or that dumb show about a cat and a dog stuck together. What is that even about?

Catdog hurts my brain. I just can't rationalize why they are stuck together and how their disgestive systems work and how they go to the toilet.
