That's why I haven't read it, even though it has gotten glowing reviews. It just seems way too sad!

I read Rain Reign last week. I really liked it. I thought it was sad, though not in the way I expected. I was positive that Rain (the dog) was going to die. Spoiler alert: Rain doesn't get sick, or die, so no worries for those who hate books with dying pets. Something else sad involving Rain happens, though.
I hated Rose's (the main character's) dad. I actually thought of this "bad dads" thread as soon as he made his appearance. Rose's uncle was great, however.

I felt like Rose's dad had a pretty nuanced portrayal. He was a bad dad, but he didn't want to be.

In "Stage Fright", Sara was painfully shy and hated social situations. Her dad was a lot more understanding about her personality than Sara's mom, who was always pushing Sara to be more sociable and make more friends, and couldn't seem to grasp why it was so difficult for her. That doesn't really make Sara's mom a bad one, but I guess it's a weaker example of a dad being the "better" parent in an Ann book. However, the mom in "Here Today" is pretty bad. I won't give away any spoilers for anyone who hasn't read it, but I thought she was awful. Selfish and delusional among other things. I read "Here Today" and yeah, that mom was just plain awful. The dad, in many respects wasn't the greatest either, but I felt for him after what happened, he was trying his best and he did attempt to make up for it. I really liked Dawn's dad (except for in that one SS with the RV because he was sort of a jerk to Mary Anne). To be honest, I liked most of the babysitter's parents (except for Kristy's bio dad obviously). I think they were painted in the view of a thirteen year old and what thirteen year old is going to love their father? I've always had a soft spot for Richard though. He get so much flack but is probably the best of them all. It was most of the charges' parents I didn't like. Like Mr. Nichols. That guy gave me the creeps.

I feel like Ann kind of redeems herself with Abby's dad. I actually think quite a few of the BSC dads are good (Kristy's being the obvious exception), but I think they realized later on just how few good dads there are, so they really made sure Abby's dad was a great guy all around.

Has anyone read Missing Since Monday? The mom is straight up crazy in that one...

There does seem to be a lot of bad dads. Patrick, Mr. Barrett, Mr. Nichols are a few. There are good dads like Watson, Richard, Mr. Pike. Ed McGill seems to in between good and bad; he's pretty selfish imo. I read Rain Reign. Rose's dad was also a bad dad. However, I don't think he really means to be a bad dad. He was just unfit of raising an autistic child. Her uncle is awesome, though.

Has anyone read Missing Since Monday? The mom is straight up crazy in that one... Yes! The mom was so crazy! The step-mom was sort of weird too. But she redeemed herself. I felt bad for the dad. He really wanted to blend two families, but was also trying to make sure his kids didn't remember their abuse.

I feel like Russ wasn't a bad dad, or at least not explicitly shown to be one. Also, Mr and Mrs Kishi aren't noticeably better or worse than each other. But I agree that the best dad was Richard, even if he went overboard. Ge was even a good dad to Jeff (and probably Dawn).
