I'm not a huge fan of theme naming unless it's subtle. Me either...theme names in families are just tacky. The Pike triplets are the only set of multiples in the series - that I can think of - who don't have a theme and I appreciate that about them. Me also...I love that they all have different names. Byron especially would have hated having a themed name. They could have done one theme for the boys and one for the girls if they wanted to go that route, and that would be less obvious than eight. Naap, I'm glad they didn't do that either...the Pike parents are far too liberal and progressive for that sort of genderized game. Or they could say screw subtlety and go straight Mary, Harry, Gary, Larry, Sherry, Jerry, Carrie, and Teri. Geeod! ๐

How ghastly! ๐๐๐๐๐ That's even worse than Shane and Zane! Can you imagine that Honey-Booboo-Kardashian-sort horror being inflicted on the poor kids? They'd go straight to court and sue their parents! ๐๐๐๐ My name is a plant - Heather - but is more commonly thought of as a name and I always thought it could be fun to play off that theme with stuff like Ivy, Flora, Reed, and not the more obvious Rose or Lily. But flower names are just done to death. Agreed, they are...I'm glad the BSC books didn't go that hackneyed route. Bird names could be fun. There are a lot of them that I think of as both birds and names - stuff like Robin or Jay - and some pretty ones like Paloma, Wren, or Phoenix that just sound like regular names. I'm glad the Pikes didn't do that to their kids either...bird names are overdone also. I imagine Mallory's life would be more exciting and extreme if her name were Phoenix Pike. Not really...I think she'd hate it even worse. I'm very glad John and Dee Pike didn't go with themed names. They're very liberal, free-thinking, creative and progressive and they don't do things just for convenience. The bird names would definitely be more fun to see what they could come up with. To me, it wouldn't be fun...it would be dull and uncreative. I think the real Pike names are far more interesting and creative. I think Mallory and Vanessa are very pretty names that suit the girls well. I'm so glad Ann Martin had a good imagination for her books and characters. Onward...what if Victoria had not been a princess, but just an ordinary girl with wealthy parents? Would her classmates have treated her a bit differently? Would she have blended in Kristy and Abby's neighborhood more easily? Would Mary Anne have been less intimidated around the Kents? And would Elizabeth have been less rattled about her kids' manners if Victoria and her parents hadn't been aristocrats? Would Victoria have been more secure and less lonely? Would Victoria maybe have become closer friends with Karen, Hannie and Nancy or with Charlotte and Becca?

You can be these things and still like theme names for your kidsโฆ? And how are they โconvenientโ? You do still have to put thought into them. โAdamโ and โClaireโ are not exactly the height of creativeโฆ
Absolutely the Pikes did things for convenience, like whip up buckets of Daddy Stew and take half the kids shopping for shoes at one time.

Not only that but if you go by the family tree Adam and Jordan are named after Dee's dad and brother. The pikes did a lot of things for convenience more so then the other parents I believe.

"Adam" and "Claire" are not exactly the height of creative... Absolutely the Pikes did things for convenience, like whip up buckets of Daddy Stew and take half the kids shopping for shoes at one time. True, some things were convenient being that they had eight kids. I just don't see John or Dee going with theme names, though. Mallory, Vanessa, Jordan and Byron would especially hate it. Anyway...onward...what if Victoria had not been a princess, but just an ordinary girl with wealthy parents? Would her classmates have treated her a bit differently? Iโm picturing the triplets named tough guy names like Hawk, Falcon, and Condor. Then Nicky would be like Stork (the dork).

Cnj, nobody is answering that what-if. Move on.
Sparklymouse, those names are amazing, especially for the Pike triplets.

Move on. Sparklymouse, those names are amazing, especially for the Pike triplets. Those names would be funny actually. Did any of you ever see the film Four Christmases? In it, Brad changed his name legally because his parents named him and his two brothers after cities they were born in. Brad had been named Orlando, but he didn't like it, so he changed it. The film was so funny...I watch it every Christmas season. Brad and Kate come from funny, crazy, weird families. Next question...moving on. What if the BSC had gone to an all-girl middle and high school? Do you all think it would have helped them be more secure and self-confident?

Falcon is actually a Spanish surname I have seen before.
I like unusual names. What was the strangest name in the books, I wonder?

It's like "Really? You named them that? Why?" I donโt like it much in real life. Fictional characters, sure. If I had to read about Adem, Bironne, and Geordan all the time then my eyes would be greatly offended.

I honestly don't understand the point of giving someone such a name. It's like "Really? You named them that? Why?" Agreed, Anzuhana!!! A name is something a child has to live with through their school years. I think it's tantamount to child abuse to give a child a name that will make them the target of ridicule by peers. Falcon is actually a Spanish surname I have seen before. I like unusual names. What was the strangest name in the books, I wonder? I like unusual names also, but not names that would draw riducle or inconvenience for the namee. Actually, Mallory, Jordan and Byron are nice unusual names that are not ridiculous. I like the Pike kids' names and am GLAD their parents didn't give them themed names that were all alike or that rhymed. If I had to read about Adem, Bironne, and Geordan all the time then my eyes would be greatly offended. Mine also...I don't like names that are "alternately" spelled...it puts a burden on the child because than others would criticize her/him thinking that she/he is mispelling her/his own name. I think I would too. I'm honestly more offended just reading Adem, Bironne and Geordan in your post than Hawk, Falcon and Condor. Me too! I hate parents who name their children silly or awful names without thinking. One name I never liked is when parents name a daughter Candy as their birth name. I've heard of Candy as a nickname for Candece, but not as a real name.

I remember reading singer Dido's Wikipedia page. Her real name is Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O'Malley Armstrong (her stage name is obviously Dido). She mentioned how she was bullied to having such a name and that Florian is a male German name. Also, her parents called her by Dido as a child. She said that it was cruel it was of her parents to name her one thing but then call her by another name.
