I think Quint's last name was Walter?

Well when Laine came to visit Stacey she went to school with her one day. Maybe Quint was going to do the same thing. Cause I know that #1 all kids love to hang out at other peoples' schools during their vacations, and #2 schools love to let random non-students hang out and disrupt classes.

Yeah, Quint's last name was Walter. Hey, maybe Jessi would've skipped school that one day to show Quint around... wink, wink

I've known a few people who had friends or cousins or whatever visiting and the visitor would spend a day, or even a few days, at school with them. I can sort of see how it could be fun and kind of exciting for a day. It was always a Really Big Deal to get that to happen, though. You had to go through the principal of course, and you had to have a good reason other than "I want him to meet all my friends and stuff!"

^What other reason could there be?
But, yeah, I can also see how it might be fun, sort of like the novelty of Take Your Daughter to Work Day...just...with your friend. And to school.

Didn't Laine spend at least a week at SMS? I can see how it might be neat for a day but a week?

i thought she spent most of that week reading the book about emirs (a summer of diamonds or whatever) and watching daytime tv.

So I just reread this and my question is
Why did Mrs McGill leave the mall? It was obviously snowing heavily and she wasn't comfortable driving in snow and yet she still wanted to drive home. That seems to me to be a stupid thing to do. Why not stay at the mall where it is warm and filled with people? Especially with Stacey being diabetic. Oh and while we're at it why would you take a backroad to get home in a snowstorm especially if you aren't driving a vehicle that is used to being dirven in snow?
Clearly I've spent too much time thinking about this.

I never realized it, but she could have done all that stuff at home! Plus she could have hung out with her other friends who would be home during the day.

I forget her reason for wanting to brave the storm. If I were Stacey I would definitely have insisted on staying in the mall.

^ I don't think Mrs McGill *gave* a reason for leaving. I guess she just thought she could beat the storm home? Maybe it never occurred to her to stay at the mall... It never occurred to me that that would've been a way better alternative until I read it here just now, actually

It didn't occur to me until the other day when I started actually thinking about it. The thing that changed since I last read the book is that I have driven in snow and I know how awful it is.

It would have been interesting to read about Stacey stuck in a mall overnight!

^That sounds more interesting than her being stuck in a car/meeting a helpful strange family to rescue her and her mom.
I always wondered why Mrs. McGill was driving on backroads. If they lived somewhere normal, where helpful strangers weren't wandering around, they could've frozen to death.
