macca mentioned this in another post, but I figured it deserves it's own topic...
So, Jessi is horrible in this book. I don't understand how anyone could possibly like her in this, unless they were just enjoying laughing at her ridiculousness. The whole "I'm really talented, but I'm not being conceited" disclaimer is out the window in this.
What I'm wondering is does this seem strange to anyone else? I mean, yeah, Jessi CAN be bitchy and snarky. She knows she's talented. But she's never acted THIS over the top. It almost seems like it's a caricature or a parody.

i liked this book, i think its one of the better super specials asides from the fact that its totally not plausible.
like how the BSC got every role in the play? arent there any actors or drama students in the high school or something. yeah right. and about jessi, yeah she was pretty out of character. what did they do to her? did AMM write this book or a ghostwriter. maybe she was so boring that they had to make her into a raging b*tch.
another thing i thought was funny was that cokie mason cared that that elie girl couldnt spell properly. isnt cokie a dumb ass? wtf would she care for? some continuity please

This was one of my favorite super specials, just because it wasn't the usual BSC-goes-on-a-trip SS, plus Jessi's behavior in this book is just laughable. I agree that it didn't make sense that most of the BSC got the lead roles in the play, but I loved that Kristy got to be Peter Pan.

unless they were just enjoying laughing at her ridiculousness. #common034# Me! Maybe they wanted to bring Jessi down a notch for a change of pace. I guess she hadn't acted quite that badly before, but has she ever not gotten a part before this?

;D Another one laughing at Jessi's stupidity here. This book was worth reading for that alone. Especially after the auditions, when Mr Cheney didn't call Jessi back and she assumed it was because he'd already decided on her for the lead role of Peter Pan. Idiot. I'm surprised she didn't accuse him of being racist. I liked Kristy's response to Jessi's continuous snorting "oh shut up. You sound like a horse"

She's probably thinking that they're all racists

I just started this one last night, never read it before and I think it is great. One question/plothole... the flyer at the beginning says all elementary school, middle school, and high school students can try out. Okay so I guess that included Stoneybrook Academy (seeing as Karen, Hannie, etc are all in the play), but no one from Stoneybrook Day School wanted to try out? It would've been fun if Shannon was in the play. Or Maria and Tiffany. Yeah what a surprise the BSC manages to pull so many lead roles, seeing as none of them wanted lead roles (ecxept Dawn and Jessi). I mean really I wouldn't even expect the 8th graders to get as many roles as they did. Seems like most of the main cast was in the eighth grade. Also, Claudia is set designer? Theres no artist in high school more qualified than her? Maybe no one else wanted the job. And um Cokie never told Claudia to "make her look good", she said that to Mallory. Yet Claudia stresses over it in the next chapter. She just said for Claudia to do a good job. Did all copies of this book come with the "Season's Readings!" post card in the middle? ETA: Why must Karen Brewer always get what she wants?! Whyyyyyy!? Oh and the auditions and rehersals for this were totally unrealistic. The auditions must've been like, 6 hours long! All those people reading lines, singing and dancing? Most likely they would've split it up at least between Saturday and Sunday. Also I've never heard of a play this large who had all members of the cast present at every rehersal. No wonder they had so many problems. And rehersals must've been long too with all the cast members having to go through their scenes. And Dawn...

I've never used my "Season's Readings" postcard. I have no idea why. It's still in the book, looking good.
Stacey to Claudia: "You sound like Mary Anne, the demented version."
Cokie to Kristy: "Kristy Thomas, you are a cretin." Kristy: "Thank you!"
Logan: "Mutiny! The pirates are going to mutiny!"
Mary Anne to Dawn: "This is a story about a magical fairyland where people can fly and they never have to grow up. Why don't you just go with it?"

I just read this for the first time. I really liked it.
I disagree with everyone on jessi though. I'd be totally pissed if I was her, too. She WAS the most qualified to be Peter, definitely moreso than friggin KRISTY. I'm sorry I can't picture Kristy singing and dancing. She seems like someone who'd be totally tone-deaf.
I hated Karen in this book. What a freaking brat! OMG! Like worse than ever before, imo. You know what they should've done? Said, "Okay, Karen, we'll make tinkerbell a person-part... but you have to try out for it with the other little girls" then given it to Hannie or something. heh.
Loved how Logan got in trouble. lmao. How uncharacteristic, but hilarious at the same time.
Oh and Mary Anne bitching at Mallory, "I am the backstage baby-sitter, not you!!" type of thing. Hilarious.

I'm sorry I can't picture Kristy singing and dancing. She seems like someone who'd be totally tone-deaf. The gist I got from the book was that Jessi was the tone-deaf one. I don't know how realistic it is that Kristy was so great, but that's what we're supposed to believe. You know how awesome the BSC is at everything. So it's kind of surprising that they made Jessi not, but I guess the lesson of the book is: Sometimes you're not the best at everything, and in those cases, your friends will be.

Judging by the comments about her singing (even her own singing), I got the impression that she was, well, crap at singing. And maybe not even that good at acting, and the only thing she *was* good at was dancing. And maybe Kristy was a better compromise/balance.

In Jessi's Horrible Prank, it's strongly implied that Jessi's singing voice isn't exactly brilliant.

Haha, Jessi's not so brilliant after all (I haven't read Jessi's Horrible Prank in ages). Good to know there *was* a good, solid reason for her not getting Peter Pan.

I guess I missed the bits about Jessi not being a fab singer/actress. Regardless, I still can't picture Kristy getting the role. It makes sense, given that she's the "leader" at EVERYTHING and there really isn't another BSC-er that would make MORE sense than her (except Jessi IMO) so yeah... I guess it works.
