Also, Jackie's being deathly afraid of the crocodile was stupid. Seriously? Even after he was shown that it was Pete Black inside. Incidentally, why didn't he have a problem with it anymore, after Jessi took over? What made the difference? Did Jackie hate Pete black? Did the two have a bad history?

BTW: This book probably sets a record for how fast we're told that Jessi's black. Right in the first paragraph.

I fell in love with Sam Thomas in this book. Unlike Charlie, Sam always had a personality in the regular series, like when he'd make prank calls to the club, and it was a pleasant surprise to come across a chapter by him here. I just love the little devil! I found it endearing that he started to refer to Stacey as 'Mrs. Darling' outside of the play. I particularly enjoyed in one of Jessi's chapters, when she recounts:
"Oh, Mrs. Darling! Mrs. Darling!" Sam Thomas was running around backstage, looking for Stacey. He never called her Stacey anymore. "Yeah?" replied Stace. She stepped away from a bunch of our friends. "I can't tie my tie, Mother," said Sam, looking pathetic.
Aww! How can you not love that? Stacey was a b*tch for how she reacted and treated him, especially when she eventually yelled at him, hurting his feelings:
Several seconds later we heard a scream. It was followed by a scuffle. Jackie Rodowsky flew into the wings where Mary Anne caught him. "Save me!" he screeched. Sam watched this calmly. Then he turned toward me, looked at me tenderly, and said, "There seems to be some sort of problem with our youngest child, my dearest darling Mrs. Darling." Suddenly I had had it. Maybe Kristy had been right all along. Maybe her brother was nothing but a jerk. I stepped away from him. "Cut it out," I whispered loudly. Sam looked at me, shocked and hurt. "What did I do?" "Nothing. Leave me alone." I stalked off. I needed a place to sulk.
What a tw*t. I don't see how any of that made Sam a jerk. At least Stacey came around. I love how she signed her last note in the prolog as 'Mrs. Darling.'

Not that Sam deserved it but I can see why Stacey would react that way. She's very into looking cool and not being embarrassed.
I love the picture of her doing his tie and pouting, haha.
And I love Sam because he's so normal and joke-y. Ethan was the cool city boy, but Sam is much more lovable.

I can't stand Jessi-and I hate her in this book! So conceited and arrogant! I hated her in the first two pages. Jessi my dear. you are aren't the only talented dancer in the whole school. Plus you are only eleven so of course they might give the role of Pan to someone older. I haven't gotten far into the book because she so annoyed me with her snobbery I had to put it down.
Even Cokie has her own chapters! Yay!

I am trying to enjoy this one more and more. It's not bad but I don't find it particularly Super Special-y because I have put on many, many plays before and I don't find it especially noteworthy. It was a good way to put all of the main characters, sub-characters, and BSC charges in a play together (if that's what you want to accomplish). Yawn. It did, however, show some lighter sides to the BSC members: Logan getting in trouble, Kristy forgetting lines, Dawn's know-it-all attitude at times...

I was reading this today. It's so funny how Mal is so nervous about the idea of measuring high school kids. Mr. Cheney and Ms. Halliday have prominent roles like they did in Winter Vacation. Lazy, Ann. What about Mr. Fiske, haha--he's an English teacher who is probably more familiar with plays than Halliday, who teaches gym. Jessi is SUPER annoying when she's so surprised that the older students give good auditions and says she didn't know such talent existed in little old Stoneybrook. Stacey sang "Mack the Knife," Dawn danced a waltz for their tryouts? That's...interesting lol

So i'm rereading this one for the second time in a year in the hopes of liking it...but nope. Jessi is such an idiot in this one, she got the case of the sour grapes because the lead went to someone else. You'd think she'd be graceful and support Kristy. IMO Jessi got a bit spoiled winning leads in ballet's all the time.

I'm not as image-conscious as Stacey is, but even I would have reacted the same way. Sam was so annoying in this book. There's something to be said for knowing when you cross the line from funny inside joke to exhausting, repetitive, don't know when to quit. Stacey spent the entire book being chased by unfunny jokes at every turn and couldn't get a break. I don't consider her reaction snappy or rude either - it was actually really professional considering the time and place.

So many things I disliked about this one:
Jessi thinking she’d automatically get the part because she’s a hotshot ballet dancer.
Mallory being a wimp and not measuring which was part of her job.
Jackie being unsupervised. Where was his parents?
Karen being a pill.
Dawn. I hate feminism and don’t need it in my books thanks.

I love this one. It's neat to see Jessi with a personality for once, even if she's being a pill. I like the Cokie chapters, it's cool to get a POV from outside the club. And Dawn's pretty justified in her complaints about the sexism in the original, its definitely one of her more valid arguments.

Thank you for reminding me about Karen throwing a tantrum during auditions so she could play Tinkerbell. How much money did Watson throw at SMS to have Kristy star and Karen play Tinkerbell?

Your review just reminded me of which version of Peter Pan they were putting on. It was the mary margaret version and it was a big stage musical in the 70s (I believe?).

That version of Peter Pan is now illegal in Tennessee. Maybe this book will get banned there too.
