Did Sam play Captain Hook in the book as well? I can't remember, but they made a big deal out of stage 'traditions'- ie: Peter Pan being played by a woman, Nana and the crocodile being the same actor, but I don't remember any reference to the tradition of the Mr Darling actor also playing the part of Hook, and apparently it's a pretty big one.

No Sam didnt play Captain Hook, a high school guy called Lucas Danver (I think that was his last name...) played the part. Someone mentioned earlier about how the book never discussed the exhilerating feelings you get on-stage, particularly when you've got the main part. Kristy didn't even seem to care that she had the lead role and it never discussed how she felt about it... that kinda bugged me.

I never thought about that, Liss, but you're right. I think mentions like those would have added a lot to the book. Maybe the writers have never experienced being on stage? Wouldn't be the first time they write about something without firsthand knowledge

I have a question about this one. Jessi told the girls that Mr. Cheney had said that she hadn't gotten the role of Peter Pan because she already had so much experience performing that he wanted to let someone else have a chance. Did he ever actually say that or was she just lying to save face? I'm pretty sure she was lying then - it was an "uh, yeaah, that's what he said" moment for her. But later on when she crosses her name off the program and he confronts her, he does tell her that it's true she has been onstage so much already and most others haven't had that experience.

Did he ever actually say that or was she just lying to save face? If he said it, I'm sure he didn't mean it, given that she was a sixth-grader who couldn't sing (in my middle school, as well as high school, seniors/seventh graders - the highest grade in our middle school; it started in fifth - always got the leads. Even if there was a more talented younger kid.) This happens all the time at my middle school now. And I hate it. I did like Kristy and Dawn in this book. They rocked, but Jessi just ruined the book for me. She needs to get over the whole experience. Did Stacey have a part besides Mrs. Darling? This book was not one of my favorites, but it was better than some of the other books.

Re reading this book, I like it better than I did originally. I still feel the same about Jessi, and that she really needed to get over herself, but I really liked the whole feel of the book. For some reason I didn't get annoyed by Kristy having trouble memorizing her lines, to me it added something to her personality, that even she has trouble with something.

Agree, msstock, with all you said (as usual ). Had never thought about Kristy having trouble memorizing her lines but this is an interesting point. Usually I like Jessi, but she and Mal both bother me a lot in Super Specials. Speaking of Mallory, it drove me crazy how she was so embarrassed to measure the boys in this one. Swinginmonkey, I don't think Stacey had a part other than Mrs. Darling but I haven't read for a while so am not positive.

This was always one of my favorite Super Specials, since I was a theater geek in high school. Even though Karen bugged the heck out of me, I did laugh when she said something like "I'm Tinkerbell! I'm supposed to tinkle!" Easily amused, me. ;D

This is another book I haven't reread in a long time because it's in storage, so every time I look at the thread, I have this moment of cognitive dissonance about the teacher being named Mr. Cheney. Because politics totally and completely aside, no one wants to picture d*ck Cheney directing a bunch of middle school girls in a musical, yes?

I, for one, also thought Jackie and the crocodile fear was kind of funny and enjoyed it how he was mad about having to wear a nightgown.

^ I agree, it was cute how Jackie tried to refuse to wear a nightgown. I thought that Mallory being embarrassed to measure the boys was realistic for an 11 year old. But I think in a real school, they would have had a male measuring the boys and a female measuring the girls just to make sure nobody was uncomfortable.

I think so too. I would still be slightly uncomfortable measuring a guy I didn't know right now if I had to. Not as embarrassed as Mallory would have been, but just slightly uncomfortable.
