^ I always saw this is more of a Claudia book. She may not have narrated as much, but she was the one who took charge and came up with all sorts of great ideas to keep them going while they were stranded. She got a chance to shine and be in charge, which she doesn't get to do all that much in the BSC. Her art is really the only outlet she has for that kind of thing.

Does anyone else feel that, when this book was being brainstormed by the publishers and Ann, that they thought, "Which 2 BSC characters haven't really been together very much so far in the series?" and put them together. Dawn and Claudia would be an interesting pair, for the obvious reasons that were shown in the book.
So I'm re-reading the summer Super Specials to get into an extra-summery mood, and I'm kinda feeling like skipping this one. Just sayin'. Although I read it a few months ago, I believe, and really liked it better during that re-read.

I always love this book though this time around am mainly reading the island chapters. Last night, I did have the thought of wondering what Maureen had heard about the sailing trip. We know how characters don't always pay attention to the weather but surely the local news' top story that night would have been all about the missing kids. I just remembered Mal "arranged" for Claire and Margo to stay with Mrs. McGill so that she could go over to Jessi's while the rest of her family went out on boats to search. I wonder what may have happened had Maureen or Stacey called one another. Stacey defiantly deciding to call a cab after her dad said she had to stay wouldn't be quite the scale of inappropriate as say Dawn stealing her dad's credit card to fly back to CT. If Maureen had called Ed's even later that night just to check whether Stacey had been told of what was going on perhaps (I'd hope) the two of them could at least somewhat civilly work out a plan for the next day. I still also at Jack's being gone for the entire weekend shades of Mr. Kuhn being awol in Mystery #4. I still would love to write a fan fic of this book. The attempt from a few years ago never turned into anything. If anyone would be interested in joining me, let me know.

Lol, I didn't realize it has only been 2 months since I re-read this! I guess time really does fly or warp where Stoneybrook and its fans are concerned. On this re-read of this, one of my favorite BSC books, I realized something shocking that was new to me. We know the Pikes go out on "two big boats" which may or may not be theirs. Why in all he** didn't ANY of the families join them?! Surely between the Newtons, Braddocks, Ramseys, not to mention Spiers and Kishis (who supposedly went boating often), one of them would have taken comfort in taking that direct action at least for an hour or two? Still dislike Dawn, more Mary Anne. It occurred to me that if it weren't for Dawn, the castaways would not have had ANY food or water with them! I guess she came in handy there. That is eye-rolling in itself. I mean that not one parent thought it would be a good idea to bring something along. We know the race originally should have been done in 3 hours or less. Still, wouldn't anyone get thirsty or hungry in all that time? But, then I remember the "worse" crazy parts of this (no communicative devices, crews of kids with no boating experience being counted as crews, etc) and the other sort of falls away. Anyway, I know this sounds like a broken record but it is true. I would really enjoy trying to make a fanfic of this. I actually like the crew as is but would try to develop the story a little more, even adding in one more day I think could improve things. If anyone is interested just send me a pm.

If I was in that situation I would almost prefer to stay back and wait. This is kinda morbid, but what if they found a body? I couldn't live with that visual.

^Yikes, you're right, very right. How very depressing. :/ I wasn't (obviously) thinking that way, just in MUCH more casual terms. IDK, still seemed like one of them might have taken a bit more direct action than hanging out at the community center. But then, the Center people sort of took a while to spring into action themselves.

I don't understand how ANY of the kids' parents - but especially feverish four year old Jamie's - let them go out on a boat with two thirteen year olds. To me that's up there with the ridiculousness of Jessi's parents letting her babysit for the whole weekend.
Someone mentioned earlier that they say the Pikes own a boat in this book, does that ever come up again?? I remember being surprised when I read it because it seemed so random. And isn't owning a boat pretty expensive & time consuming? How do they have time for the upkeep etc with all those kids?
I would have liked for Claudia & Dawn to have formed a special bond due to this incident, definitely. Then in a future book Stacey & Mary Anne could be jealous of their two besties getting closer to each other.

^ i don't know why jessi would want to watch a baby for an entire weekend anyway. watching babies is consistently exhausting. i never realized it, but the part about the pikes owning a boat (or is it both boats?) is pretty unusual. even before mr pike lost his job, it didn't seem like they had much money to go around. there is a big difference between being comfortable with your money and having enough disposable income to buy a boat. or maybe it's a very old boat that they've had since before the kids came along.

I'd think that with that many kids it would be very difficult to have a lot of savings. You'd have to be pretty wealthy to be able to pull it off or a really savvy financial planner or something. Also, wouldn't it be a bit worrisome to have all those kids (Pikes) on a boat together? There are so many bodies to account for in such a situation. Plus, think of all of the life-jackets you'd have to buy. That's a lot of orange!

So, I reread this again. Mr. McGill, Bart, Logan, & the reporters were jerks. Mr. McGill: Telling Stacey, she couldn't go back to Connectuit. Since her best friend was missing. He was jerkest of all. They can go plays, fancy dinners, shopping, & etc..the next time Stacey went. Logan: Got mad at Mary Anne, cause, she didn't believe him, he had baby-sit. He could call her, real quick while she was baby-sitting. Bart: Being so selfish. Only thinking of himself. Kristy wanted to canacled the game. Kristy friends friends & clients are missing. They can reschulde another ball game. Reporters: Asking BSC who were by the Commuinty Center. How does that make you feel? Jeez, reporters, what do you think. No, they just want be on tv. Have their 15 minute of fame. Aunt Cecila: Blaming on Jessi. For thinking, she told Becca she could go on the cruise. When, the parents okay it. Aunt Cecila, should be scolding the parents not Jessi. Mr. & Mrs. Rasmey: If, you live now a days. Your 3 kids will be in CPS. (Off topic) I was reading Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls. From 13 years old to 9 years old. The parents, left the kids alone, while they went over to their Uncle's house for a week. This was 19 century. (Back on topic.) Pikes two boats, must be not that big. If, they need to boats. Illsurated of Jamie coming behind them. While they are facing away from him. Still cracks me up. The pictures inside the book. They make Haley look like a boy.

Where I'm at, child protection services would have been at the Ramseys in a heartbeat for that! Jessi was not even 12 yet and with an infant for a whole weekend with everyone out of town.

I was outraged I couldn't at 11. I was excited to turn 11 cause it meant I was "old enough" to be of babysitting age, and learned the hard way.... At 12 I could stay home alone just for short periods of time, but did not get a key until 13 when I could do it for longer and let myself in after school and during lunch.

I always thought the boats the Pikes used for searching were owned by the Community Centre.

I just finished rereading the island parts. I am realizing what I really like about this book is that it shows (a little bit anyway) how the castaways all bonded. I will always wish the writers had remembered at least the basics of this adventure and had one moment where maybe Becca or Haley went to Claudia or Dawn about something because they felt closer to them. Or the families getting together after the fact sort of how the kids were there to greet Jamie. Speaking of Jamie, I always feel awful for him in this story. :/ It was though so cute when he announces he can spell six words, "Jamie, Lucy, Mommy, Daddy, Love" and then he shouts the 6th, "HELP." I want to hug him. Loved how awesome Jeff was too and always in my mind yell at Dawn and Claudia when they discuss if they are bringing enough food--that they're not! Anyway, I do like this one also because it is an (outside of Stacey in NY) all Stoneybrook story but Baby-sitters on Board will always be my very favorite super special, in fact I should read it soon.
