This one has received a lot of snark and rightly so - but I reread it the other day and I couldn't put it down! Stacey - mentioned a lot, her dad was very selfish in this one. I liked her letter to him. She might have been even firmer but then again, it is not easy to confront your parents. MA - obviously horrible in this book! I was surprised we saw Dawn on the island still worrying about what she had done to MA instead of thinking, wow MA sure blew that out of proportion. Dawn - I didn't think she was as useless as she herself and others made her out to be - I didn't really notice it until right at the end and also, not taking charge isn't necessarily being useless. She was taking care of a sick 4year old after all! Claudia - well done to her in this book. Yet another SS in which she has suddenly been pursuing a certain hobby without it being mentioned before or after (likr skiing in SS3). Would have been nice if we had seen more of her and her family casually pursuing sports together - might have also gone a bit further to explaining her fit physique! Kristy - oh man, Bart was a jerk! He is my fave bsc bf too, but he was really disappointing here. I think Kristy was too kind to him. Jessi - nothing new to say. Still think her aunt was wrong to blame all on her; obviously right in every other way. Mal - didn't have much of a story did she? Apart from the search? Again would have been nice to see her family's boat mentioned again!
So, this is puzzling... Dawn and Claud are not allowed to go sailing on their own... So their solution is to take a bunch of kids and that's ok? Idgi! In spite of the implausibility I liked this story. I didn't remember the storm scene to be so scary, with the kids having to swim and all, nor that people feared all had drowned! Quite dark!

Mr McGill was such a jerk. Like Stacey would have any fun doing any NYC stuff when her friends are missing. Also Mary Anne overreacted completely over the phone call, but I guess that was just to add a dramatic twist. The most shocking part was indeed the Ramseys' child care - but it was really unfair of aunt Cecilia to blame Jessi for it. That's what I thought - Aunt Cecelia was right that Jessi shouldn't have been left in charge of two kids for that long, but it wasn't her fault that they seemed to think it was all right. In fact, Jessi handled the situation as responsibly as she was able to. It's not like anyone knew they were going to get shipwrecked. Stacey's dad is generally pretty bad. I sometimes feel like he's treating Stacey more like a status symbol than someone he has any emotional attachment to. Like "Hey, isn't my daughter an amazing perfect person?"

I just finished re-reading this one. It was always one of my favourites as a kid. I never realized how selfish Mr McGill was over the course of the series, but what you said about him treating Stacey as a status symbol nails it on the head! He does this to her again in #58 when her mom is sick! He doesn't seem to care about Stacey at all. It's just, "IT'S MY WEEKEND AND I SCHEDULED EVERY MOMENT WITH BROADWAY SHOWS AND FANCY DINNERS AND OTHER EXPENSIVE RESERVATIONS SO I CAN PROVE HOW AWESOME I AM AND WE'RE DOING IT MY WAY!!!" Poor Jessi. She totally did get misblamed. She was rather mature in calling Aunt Cecelia, even though she really didn't want to. I'm excited to read #36 next, and seeing Jessi face-off with Aunt Cecelia haha

I think Mr. McGill is reacting to the divorce. It doesn't seem like he has any real custody (like, say Watson) so when Stacey comes to visit he is protective of the visit, and unfortunately that can seem unreasonable.
He is also a type-a personality, so not used to not being in charge.
And on top of that, he is a workaholic but I think he is trying to be better with her daughter but sadly he overcompensates and gets mad when it seems like his efforts are being thrown in his face.

^^what do you mean by "real" custody? The McGills had a pretty ironclad custody agreement, it seems.

From what I remember, Stacey didn't have a set period where she went to her dad's, it seemed like maybe once a month.

Oh, must have missed that detail. Seemed like she would visit less than that, especially considered the regular books spanned a month and she may have gone once a month, if that.

I think it just depended on what the narrative required. I remember her going to NYC a fair amount, though.

Or a way to get out of writing a plot line for her. Lol

I can see what people mean when they say that Stacey's custody is up in the air, unlike the agreement that Watson has (Karen and Andrew are there every second weekend, without fail, unless there's extenuating circumstances). It seems like Stacey just goes to NYC whenever she can. I feel like it's more similar to the agreement the Schafers have over Dawn, it's just that since NYC is way more closer than California, it's easier for Stacey to see her dad more often than Dawn. On that same vein, because both of Karen's parents live in the same city/town (just on opposite ends), it's super easy for them to split the custody more strictly. They don't have to worry about it affecting the kids' school and friends and plans. Karen can go to a birthday party just as easily from either parent's house.

I just reread this one today and I can't understand why this used to be a favourite of mine. I did alot of eye rolling during this reread. Here goes:
Mr McGill was such a jerk! So selfish! He doesn't get any better because he does this to her again when her mother gets sick.
Bart: He too was a jerk, getting all pissed because Kristy cancelled a game.
Mary-Anne: my God, she was a b*tch in this one. I thought she was meant to be sensitive??
It's also unrealistic to let a 4 year old go sailing and 13 year olds to sail without chaperones.
And to let an 11 year old stay home alone with her siblings while her parents went away. What is wrong with that family??

^ Yeah, I know this is probably the most unrealistic, ridiculous super special. Yet this book is a guilty pleasure of mine and this is one of my favorites mainly because I love survival books (like Hatchet and My Side of the Mountain and Baby Island) and also I LOVE to snark on this one.

This is so fun to snark I think. This was a favorite of mine too and survival stories are fun to read.
