I noticed the Dawn comment this time too the last time I re read it. I found it so mean and I couldn't believe Dawn said it.

I'm only halfway through this one (picked it up yesterday and promptly got distracted) but I agree with the foreshadowing of Mimi's death, with Stacey's parents and their divorce (they're really quite snarky to each other). I had to laugh at Dawn's having cable and a VCR (ooh!) because even in 1989, the book's copywright, we had cable and had done so for around 5 years. We also had a VCR, but it wasn't the drama. Anyway, I would have put the smackdown on so many people in this book, starting with all of Mary Anne's bunkies and ending with Mallory's. I'm sure I have more to hate on when I finish.

^ Agree that most of the bunkies were awful in this one. Another reason I never wanted to go to camp. ;D

Yeah, I was surprised at how mean some of the bunkies were in this one. I would have probably eventually snapped and told them off.

It was because of this book that I worried before going away to camp every year that no one in my cabin would like me. Luckily, just the opposite happened. I was actually FAR more popular at camp than I ever was in my "real life."

Something I noticed in this book, and actually, other books too -- no mention of showers. Like...the girls will hurry to the bathrooms to brush their teeth, wash their faces, etc, but you never hear about anyone taking a shower. If they only have say, 20 minutes until breakfast, how is that really enough time to get ready for the day? I understand it's camp and no one needs to look glamorous, but I wouldn't want to walk around all day feeling gross. Just a sentence where Claudia hands her shampoo bottle to Stacey, on her way back to the bathroom, would have worked. I don't know why this bugs me as much as it does.

Maybe because mentioning shower would imply that they smelled? I dunno, I guess in my head they were showering superfast or something.

At my cousins' camp, they let the kids go days without showering. Which is totally another reason I would never have wanted to go. A long time ago, there was this show on the Disney Channel about kids at camp called "Bug Juice" and I always kind of picture Camp Mohawk like the camp from the first season. Especially the counsellors--in my head they all look like Luna and Annie. Re: uniforms, I think maybe it's sort of an old-fashioned thing that Ann didn't realize wasn't so common any more--my mom worked at a summer camp when she was in college, and the kids there had to wear uniforms. The only camp I've ever worked at is my church day camp in the summer, and the kids are supposed to wear official t-shirts, but that's so we can keep track of whose in what group, since each grade gets a different color. For some reason it bothers me that most of the girls have pretty short shorts on the cover, and Claudia has really big loose ones. I can't tell if its her shorts that make her legs look weirdly short on the cover, or if it's just weird porportion. Also, the Jessi model has a completely different face from most of the covers. None of them really look how I picture them on this cover, but I think throughout the series Jessi is drawn the least consistently.

^ I think this cover in general is just one of the worst. ;D As for uniforms, maybe Ann wanted to give it more of a "camp" feel by using stereotypical uniforms. All camps are probably different, anyway.

^One of the summer camps that I went to had uniforms. They did not, however, have teepees on them. Fortunately, I only had to go there for a month. The other camp I was sent to (one of the 6 week program ones) did not have uniforms. My parents claim that I loved it, but I think they are crazy. Then again, I don't know what I would have done at home for an entire summer. Probably hung around with crackheads and ruffians.
This was my favorite SS book, btw.

All camps are probably different, anyway. I actually think the cover to this book is one of the best. I liked the uniforms they wore because they reminded me of the uniforms the girls wore to camp in The Parent Trap movie (the Lindsay Lohan version, my favorite movie ;D). A couple of weeks ago, I had to go on an overnight retreat with my class (a requirement for graduation, I go to a catholic high school) and most of us (including me) didn't take showers because they looked gross and the few that did (the high-maintenance girls that roomed with us) said that there was little to no hot water so we never took any, just washed our faces and brushed our teeth. It wasn't that big of a deal because we were just gone overnight but if we were gone for longer than that we probably would've used them. I also don't enjoy walking around feeling gross either. While I was on retreat, everyone just walked around in pajama pants and sweatshirts all day (which was weird to see at first because you don't normally see your class looking like that) but I just put on jeans and a t-shirt because I felt hot in a sweatshirt and walking around in PJ pants reminds me of being home sick so I got dressed to make myself feel better. I was probably overdressed compared to everyone in their PJ's but I didn't care ;D.

^ This makes me think of a guy I knew who was obsessive about showers and took about 3 a day. We always called him the "secret sniffer" too because he could detect BO from a mile away. ;D I never found the lack of mention of showers weird because I figured it was something like going to the bathroom that just didn't need to be mentioned unless it was important to the plot.

^I dunno, going to the bathroom and taking showers at summer camp is always weird though. There's always one or two kids who, like, refuse to bathe until the counselor makes them. I've been to a lot of summer camp, and there's always at least one girl. It's gross. I don't understand these people. They weren't all little kids either. There is also the "first time camper" who thinks the showers are going to be outside, and then there are the ones who expect group showers. Then there was girl scout camp, where they had normal bathrooms -- only at the camp center. It was set up so that different groups had different camp sites. By the camp sites, there were actual outhouses. Which someone had to clean. They made me do it, and I threw up all over. I warned them, they said I was faking it, and I threw up from the smell. I did not go back there. They also had this water issue, it was white and smelled like rotten eggs. They wouldn't let us use the phone to call our parents, so I had to write to my grandparents and have them bring me some bottled water because I didn't know like the other girls. And I am way off topic. I'm sorry. I tend to do that. I really liked the idea of this camp - 13 year old CITs, free time, actual camping in the woods. Sounds fun to me! Too bad it's fictional. Wasn't there a camper named Nonie? She was weird.
