I got to thinking about how the "Jessi is black" thing came about, and wondered how many characters of colour I could recall offhand. Feel free to add your headcanons, too, or start an actual discussion Off the top of my head: The Kishis, the Ramseys, Keisha, that random woman Jessi talks to in BSC in the USA, the whole Dance NY crowd, the Walkers, Smita Narula. The Vargases, I suppose. Anyone else?

I haven't heard of any of the others except Bobby Gianelli, and I (personally) am inclined to count him as white. Ditto with other Italian and Greek characters like the Papadakises. Oh, and there's the Hsus (Timmy and Scott). And I guess there's a load of extra/unnamed/one-off characters, like the families in the Kwanzaa book and the random black kid(s?) Jessi teaches in one of her books.

They go to private schools and live on the other side of town from Jessi. Is she really the only one from a different class?

He's a side character from Happy Holidays Jessi.

Ms. Colman was black, although she'll always be white in my mind. I didn't know she was black until someone on here said so.

I said this before ages ago and most people didn't agree, but I think of Mrs. Perkins and the girls as Hispanic. They have dark hair and their names are pretty popular within the Hispanic/Latino communities, especially if you pronounce Myriah like Maria.

They were introduced with blonde hair in The Ghost at Dawn's House. I'm Hispanic and have never known a Maria spelled any differently!

Martha and her mother from Jessi and the Awful Secret? The little girl who was really good at ballet, but her mother stopped sending her because a neighbour told her it was a waste because no dance company would accept a "coloured" dancer.

If you look at the casting list that they've released so far for the new TV show, it is making Stoneybrook look much more diverse than the books did.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Perkins family had Latina in them. I'm Latina myself and have several relatives named Maria.

I guess it's a step up from the popular stereotype in other books of blacks being poor.

^ True and it's not a bad I just wish that they were used more. I mean Sara was mentioned often enough in the Little Sister series.
