When I was younger, I always had assumed that Mary Anne was the youngest of the club (with her birthday being in September). But recently, I adjusted the timeline in my head, and figured out that Mary Anne is the oldest of the the group, having turned thirteen sometime in the middle of Kristy's Great Idea. Mary Anne would have to have skipped a grade if she was eleven and started seventh grade.
I think Mary Anne being the oldest would be great in a ironic sort of way given how Richard dictated on how she dresses and wears her hair, while stacey and Claud, despite being a year younger than her got to dress what they wanted.

Yeah, MA turned 13 in Logan Likes MA right after she started 8th grade. Then she was frozen at that age...

I wonder did Mary Anne skip a grade since she's the youngest kid in her class?

I think she did? It is odd that she's the youngest. I think she's technically supposed to be in 7th grade, not 8th.

That way the club wouldn't have completely eighth and sixth graders. With Mary Anne in seventh grade, we could have gotten a glimpse of seventh grade life in SMS.

^ yeah, that's a good point. The only time we got to see the 7th grade (other than the first 6 books) life was when Claudia was temporarily moved back to the 7th grade.

She wouldn't have to had skipped a grade. My brother has a mid-October birthday, and my mom had the choice of him being the youngest or oldest in his grade by when she started him in kindergarten. She chose to start him later whereas more parents push for school asap. Richard seems like that type.

One of my sisters was a Karen and she skipped kindergarten and headed to first grade. She's going into 8th grade, 12 going on 13, so I assumed the same thing happened to MA even though it wasn't mentioned.

My birthday's in late October and I turned six before a lot of my kinder classmates. I also didn't go to pre-k. My mom couldn't let go

The books led me to believe Mary Anne was the youngest of all the 8th graders in the BSC with the latest birthday, that is until Abby came.

Mary Anne Likes Logan clearly states that she turned thirteen in eighth grade.
So, yes, until Abby came along, Mary Anne was indeed the youngest of the senior BSC.
I have a niece whose birthday is in late September and she started kindergarten almost a month before her fifth birthday.
So, it is not any unheard of conundrum for Mary Anne to turn thirteen after they start eighth grade.
