One thing I liked that was mentioned earlier in this thread was that Karen was friend with every girl in her class in this book.

Well, Pamela showed up in this one. She caused the rift with the girls in the classroom after that. It's weird how one person can cause a shift in the dynamic like that, but I've seen it so many times.

First read this book in 5th grade and loved it instantly.Agreed with everyone 1000% that Nancy was horrible in this book, especially when she tattled on Karen. Sure it was cold of Karen to uninvite her but it was still justified..I would have felt the same. Pamela was ridiculous too, but nothing compared to her behaviors in following books. The making up scene between Nancy and Karen was great though. Also loved the interactions between Ricky and Karen.

This was one of the first Little Sister books I read in 2nd grade and it's still one of my favorites. As an adult, I absolutely cannot stand Karen but this book is one of the few times where I actually feel bad for her. She wanted to invite the super cool new girl to her sleepover and then the super cool new girl ends up being a little bratty diva.
I remember her saying she won't eat pizza because it'll give her bad breath. I mean...maybe if it had garlic on it? I remember Karen getting sassy with her and warning her of peanut butter breath when Kristy made her the peanut butter sandwich LOL. And I think Pamela calls the Wizard of Oz babyish while Karen's sitting there in a "SURRENDER DOROTHY" shirt. Isn't the Wizard of Oz Karen's favorite movie? She must have felt so insulted. Though I agree with everyone else here - I wouldn't call the Wizard of Oz scary.
Aren't all the girls like blown away by Pamela's sophistication and coolness when she says her older sister lets her wear her perfume or am I thinking of another book XD

Pamela was such a little miss in this one. I mean, it was pretty nice of Karen even to invite her to the sleepover, it was only her first day at school and the other girls didn't really even know her yet. Although I guess if they did know her at that point they wouldn't have invited her...so maybe she's just lucky The whole thing about only sleeping in beds and making the others kids feel like 'babies' made me mad! I mean, I understand a little kid not feeling comfortable to sleep on the floor, especially at a strange house, but Pamela was just rude about it and she was really mean about Tickly and Moosie, even if she is only 7. I really don't think she deserved such a warm welcome and such inclusivity. I don't have a problem with Nancy in this one. She's only 7 and imagine how excited she would probably have been to be getting that invitation in the mail, she was probably so excited to check the mailbox every day and really disappointed when hers continually wasn't there - especially once all of the other girls had there's and hers still hadn't come. Things like that can be a pretty big deal to a little kid. I loved how Nancy bought a sleeping bag for Pamela, that was so sweet. I also loved how when Pamela said 'I sleep in beds' (yet again) Nancy just said 'How boring' and then continued started talking about something completely different. I like how, without being particularly mean or vindictive, Nancy just put Pamela in her place and just said it how it is. I really loved the bit when Leslie said that her brother told her that thunder is caused by dead people bowling and that when their bowling ball goes into the gutter it falls out of the sky and through the roof of your house. That was so funny. This book really took me back to what it was like having a sleepover at that age and was really nostalgic and familiar feeling. The Wizard of Oz was also my favourite childhood movie, but not for the scary parts, more for Oz and the munchkins and the bright colours and all of the great characters and the adventure and stuff.

I'm bringing this story back that I told earlier in the thread... Like I said, I read this book in 2nd grade and in my reading class, my teacher gave us a project to write a postcard to a book character. Since I had just read this book, I decided to write mine to Karen. And the whole postcard was basically me saying, "Why did you invite Pamela to your sleepover? She was so mean!" I was just so concerned with that! I'd share the postcard but it's sadly been lost to time

It's a shame it's not still around, I reckon it would be funny to read, it's funny how things like that concern little kids so much! That sounds like a project I would have enjoyed, I probably wouldn't have been able to decide on a character though and would have ended up writing a whole bunch of postcards.

Looking at other posts in the thread, I'm remembering how Pamela was just finding the most random stuff to pick on Karen for. Like doesn't she tease Karen because the big house has a playroom and she says that's babyish? Like, Karen has two younger siblings, of course they'd have a playroom. Then she calls the Wizard of Oz babyish even though all the other girls are excited to watch. Knowing how blunt Karen can be, I'm surprised she didn't confront her about being such a b!tch at her party. Or does she? It's been years since I read this.
What book is it when Pamela and Leslie and Jannie tease Karen for dressing as a witch for Halloween and call it babyish? Then they come in grownup costumes like a flight attendant and a waitress XD
