I was surprised that he really was up to something untoward. Usually Karen's imagination runs away and I expected some plausible explanation.

I liked the mystery. I like how Karen tried to find proof that Bill was doing something wrong.

This was just the fun story to read after "Karen's Big Sister." This book was published in July, 1999. Claudia and the Clue in the Photopgraph (one of my favorite BSC Mysteries) came out five years earlier in August, 1994. I wonder if Stoneybrook Savings Bank was the same bank both times. In "Clue" "Savings" was not part of the bank's name. If it was the same, I wish Claudia had talked with Nancy's Dad (Bank President) in her mystery. Andrew, Karen, and Merry even tail Bill to a coffee shop for lunch that very well could have been Thelma's Cafe from "Clue." And hey, wasn't Jim Zibreksi, the crook in "clue," the VP? I wonder if Bill Bartlett hatched his swindling idea from his former co-worker? And are all adult Stoneybrook house-sitters named Bill and involve some type of "house" mystery? (Bill Grauman, Stacey and the Mystery at the Empty House). We know Jessi was a pet sitter to the Mancusis. I never spied as a kid but did enjoy people watching and loved the Bobbsey Twins books. I think I opened my first savings account at 9 or 10. My first big purchase was an Atari 2600. Back to this story. Mr. Dawes probably should not have left his valuable lap-top computer lying around. In fact if he truly went to Seattle for business he should have taken it with him! I did think it was awesome how, probably with Nancy's help, he had the special pink party table at the bank set up for Karen when she was given her check reward. As unlikely as this mystery was to happen "in real life," I will take it any day over cat burglars for example. Kid mystery over crazy and dangerous situation for kids. Not that Karen wasn't in danger herself just that it wasn't to the same direct degree (thank goodness) as the BSC were when they were dealing with Reinhart Golem. One lighter question, did Percy the Daweses old dog, and key to this mystery, ever make an actual book appearance?

Mr. Dawes was working from home before that was even a thing. I hope that my bank president doesn’t have a home laptop with a weak password lying around. It was 1999. We weren’t taught to throw numbers and special characters in there yet. 😀 It kinda weirded me out that nobody closed their shades in Karen’s neighborhood. The family came back from dinner and Karen could see straight into her room because Lisa left the light on. Then, obviously, she could see Bill creeping around the Dawes’ house or she wouldn’t have been suspicious. I liked the little dance party that Karen and Nancy had. Doing the shaker and the snake. Sounded like the Harlem Shake and the Worm? Then they listened to a tape of Nancy playing the clarinet which did not sound like such a good time. I have no idea why the Daweses needed a live-in house sitter. They needed someone there to fix things that broke and to take out the garbage. Neither of those things should be needed if NO ONE IS HOME. They could have had someone take the kitten so that it wasn’t home alone and then had Karen’s family grab the mail and water plants and leave a light or two on at night so that the house didn’t look empty. Bill’s girlfriend’s parents wouldn’t “let” them get married, so they were skimming money from people's accounts to run away together. Or they could just go to the courthouse and get married like regular poor people? (Not that courthouse weddings are bad or only for low income! It’s totally what I would do if I got married.) I liked the part about Karen opening up her own bank account. She said that it made her feel happy and important. Some people think that little kids don’t need their own bank accounts or library cards or things like that, but they do! It makes them feel good and they learn as they go. (Karen could earn like 10 cents in interest too. 😛 ) Bill looked like a turd. Only Tom Selleck should have that mustache. Attachments:
