I just read this one.
I hate to go against the popular opinion here, but I don't think it was that sad. It's probably just because I have no idea who grandad even is. Is he Lisa's dad? Is he Seth's dad?
Why do so many people seem to have farms in Nebraska? Isn't that where Mary Anne's grandmother lived too? (or was that Maryland? I can never remember)
The guinea pig subplot was amusing, but it had me rolling my eyes at the thought of bringing the entire class to the pet store to pick out a guinea pig. And then later when everyone had to stand around and do nothing while they auctioned off the rodents. Then later when the entire class stood around and watched as the parents came to pick up the guinea pigs. Come on Mrs. Coleman, I know you are pregnant and all, but you have more time wasting activities then any other 2nd/3rd grade class ever.

I haven't read this one yet but I think "Grandad" was Seth's dad.
Mary Anne's grandmother lives in Iowa.

I just read Karen's Plane Trip where Karen visits Granny and Grandad, so that one was a little sad to read knowing he was going to be dead soon. It's a shame that Karen was so close to Nannie and Seth's parents but hardly seemed to think twice about Lisa's or Watson's (his were dead? Maybe?).
I don't remember much else about the book. My school didn't do class pets, so I couldn't relate to that plot at all. What do they do about allergies, just make the kids suffer?

I was felt so sad when I read this book. Seth's father was so sweet. Karen was able to remember the good times she had with Grandad.

^ I agree Sparklymouse. With all the references to Ben Brewer, it would have been nice to have learned more about Watson's family! I also wonder if Nannie was introduced to Grandma?
As for this book, any book about a Grandpa dying is sad to me because it reminds me of my own late beloved Grandfather. Overall though, this one seemed like a blur about mainly guinea pigs.
On a somewhat lighter note, with the great exception of Alma Spier and Mimi (I still hate that Mimi, especially was killed off) all other characters who died were male. AMM really did have man issues.
Mimi's husband Nannie's husband Jonathan Stevenson Morbidda Destiny's husband?
Charlotte's paternal Grandfather was in the hospital
Louie Thomas was even a male dog. I guess so was Boo Boo a male cat. (Not a cat person but yeah in the end it was sad when he died). Hey wasn't Sarge Pike, Mal's only once mentioned cat male?
Now that I'm thinking about this morbid topic...Mr. Staples wife did die (From SS#1) Norman and Sara Hill's Grandma died as did (or am I making this up) the Craines' Grandma?
Of course the deadbeat of all deadbeats Patrick Thomas was male.
With the exception of SS#3, all the "villians" were male. (I think) I'll have to check this on another series re-read sometime.
Some mixed, odd thoughts!

I'd hardly count Mimi's husband since he was gone long before the series began.

I presume Nannie's husband is gone. I don't know for sure if it's ever defined.

I thought it was mean of Pamela to call Karen a baby when she cried, despite not knowing why Karen was crying. I thought it was sweet of Karen wanting to give her grandma a guinea pig so she would feel better.

It was actually LESLIE who calls Karen a baby -- not Pamela. After she finds out Karen is crying because her Grandfather died, Leslie sends her a note which says "I am sorry."
I also wanted to tell Afton that she was right in the fact that Evelyn is in The Kids in Ms Colman's Class - Science Fair. Too bad she is no longer with us to read this.

Watson's mom "Neena", who was also referenced in Karen's Grandmothers, makes an appearance in the first book Karen's Witch, unless I'm mixing that up with Lisa's mom. It's really been too long since I've touched that book.
Lisa's parents seemed to be around for big holidays in the beginning and for bringing presents like Hyacynthia

Yes, Neena was apparently friends with Morbidda Destiny. Interesting how she barely shows up in the other books. I guess it would make sense seeing as that was Waston's childhood home, so Neena would have been her neigbhour at one time.

Nope, it was Lisa's mother who was in Karen's Witch.
