Just a random thought: I'm reading this book and the mayor is referred to as "he," so Stoneybrook must have gotten a new mayor before Baby-sitters' Island Adventure, because the mayor in that book is female.

^ Yeah, I remember that too - and I guess so! I assume that (based on the publication dates) there's a good few years in between Karen's Rollerskates and Island Adventure. So I guess it makes sense seeing as elections happen every 4 years or so!?

I just reread this one. Hadn't read it in years! I'd forgotten all the cute autographs Karen got. Shannon signed her cast and her handwriting looked almost identical to Mary Anne's.
This book makes me wish I had learned to skate. I still can't!

I was going to say that skating is kind of like riding a bike. Once you learn, you never forget. But then I thought that if you loose flexibility -- or develop bad balance -- those things wouldn't help skating.

This book is better written than some of the later series books, I guess, but it's not my favorite. It's kind of boring and nothing really happens. Reading about Karen trying to get autographs while lying about how she broke her wrist doesn't really make for an exciting book, I guess.
I wish Karen and Ricky had stayed rivals for longer into the series. I guess maybe once Pamela was written in they didn't need Ricky for the role, but Karen and Ricky were more amusing to me when they were fighting than when they were "married".

Did anyone else ever get their pets to sign their casts or is that just a Karen Brewer thing?

Also finished reading this. I read it when I was in 2nd grade (this might've been the first LS book I've read!) and really liked it. I agree that the title is misleading. But a lot of BSC/LS titles are misleading so there's no surprise there lol. Anyway, I definitely didn't like it now as much as I did back then. Karen acted fairly bratty but considering she was only 6 years old and she had a broken wrist, it was pretty understandable I chuckled when she nagged everyone to sign her cast for some reason. Not one of the most enjoyable LS books, but I liked it okay

I found the story with the caterpillar and then the mother caterpillar with a baby and then the mother with two babies was sweet and funny in this one. I also loved seeing all the cute things people wrote on Karen's cast and the handwriting. I especially liked Mrs Porters black cat. This one isn't one of my favourites but it was a quick entertaining read with some really sweet elements.

At first I was always confused about why this book is titled Karen's Roller Skates, since we only see Karen in her skates for a couple of chapters. Karen's Broken Bone or Karen's Injury may have been more appropriate.
However, I can understand he the publisher kept "roller skates" in the title because "Karen's Broken Bone or "Karen's Injury" may have been too morbid sounding for children.
