Aw, I meant that since SV had ghostwriters too, you'd think they'd screw up on those details once in a while..
Anyway, thinking over it, it was shown carefully that Mallory did a lot of whining about her looks and was a dork for it, but while Shannon and Abby- maybe even Dawn in some very early books('not pretty, but pleasant') weren't necessarily overly attractive, they valued themselves for their achievements.
Ever notice how we don't know anything about Claudia's teeth? And I think she would start to beef up as soon as she got her period. But the fact that she never seemed to excercise, even compared to the other girls who ride their bikes to her house, wasn't a very good message.

Nobody has mentioned this in this thread, I don't think, but Jessi is often described as very pretty, what with her "long, long legs" and deep brown eyes and whatnot.

Ever notice how we don't know anything about Claudia's teeth? Yeah, but we didn't hear about anyone's teeth, other than Mallory's because of the braces. Yeah, Mallory noticed her initially because of how "beautiful" she was. She totally checked Jessi out.

I have never given any of this much thought.
I don't mind the blonde hair/blue eyes thing because when I think of blondes, I think of blue eyes! And I don't think that Kristy and MA were plain because of their brown hair, they were plain because Kristy only wore jeans and t-shirts and MA dressed like a child. After MA gets her haircut, she is not described as plain really is she?
Oh and the size 6 SV thing is hilarious because now, I don't think a size 6 would be considered so slim and slender and perfect. Also in SV they literally like, HATE fat people. Its slightly disturbing.

^ word about the fat-hate in SVH. Really wouldn't want to go near those books if I had weight issues.

^ Glad I never read the SVH books. I was pretty chubby as a kid, sounds like the books wouldn't have done me any favours. Great thread! I've mentioned a few times how much I hate the fact that Kristy's immature because she doesn't care about fashion and make-up. I've read in at least one book that Kristy is actually quite pretty, but she'd be really pretty if she wore nicer clothes and make-up. I think it's pretty sad that Ann and the ghostwriters promoted that message. I've noticed the blonde hair, blue eyes thing before. It strikes me as a little odd that all the blondes have blue eyes, and (I think) everyone else - the non-blondes - has brown eyes. I myself have brown hair and blue eyes. I wonder what Ann/the ghostwriters would make of that??

And yeah, those writers definitely needed to learn the meaning of variety.

It's a fair point, but I have to say, I never cared about fashion or makeup either, and the books didn't make me feel like I was immature or ugly. Of course by the time I was the age where you probably start to care about that nuts, I already figured I was kind of immature because I was still reading BSC books

Actually, I don't remember the books giving me any bad feelings about my fashion sense either when I was younger, but everyone's different, so it would probably affect at least some. I was just like, "yeah, whatever, I couldn't care less what you're wearing, because I wouldn't want to look like that anyway. " I'm still not one to be concerned with the latest fashions, but I like getting more dressed up now, I have to admit. Just not in any of Stacey's/Claudia's bizarre clothing. ;D
I still don't care if someone thinks I'm totally "stale" for reading BSC books. ;D

^ That's how I was too. I thought it was stupid that they called Kristy immature but it didn't bother me. I just found it funny how she wore the "uniform" because I could relate. Could also relate to kids calling me immature for it and not caring.

I don't know what the writers would have done with me as I have black hair and dark skin yet I have blue eyes. I don't think that would be possible in BSC-land.

what i hated was how kristy and MA were always described as "even looking a little bit alike--they're both short, with brown hair and brown eyes". it's like brown hair and brown eyes is so common and indistinguishable that they even "look alike". dawn and stacey are both tall with blonde hair and blue eyes, but they've never once been described as "looking alike".
yeah, this bugged me a lot too. especially because i also really wished i was blonde as a child.

Yeah, that bugs me, too. But the weird thing is that Stacey and Dawn often end up looking like twins on the covers. ;D Especially on Dawn's Big Date....seriously, if I didn't know any better, I'd say the girl sitting next to Lewis was Stacey, not Dawn.

I guess MA and Kristy are often described as looking alike to compensate for the fact that they are best friends yet their appearance is the only thing they have in common.

I think that was probably it. I never pictured Dawn and Stacey as looking all that much alike because for some reason, I picture Stacey as shorter (not sure why though) with shorter, curlier, more golden hair and Dawn with much longer blonde hair and maybe a paler complexion and freckles. I have no idea where I really got those ideas from, though. I think MA and Kristy (at least how I picture them) have the same shade brown hair and same shade brown eyes while I picture Dawn being much "paler" than Stacey in everything.
