Does anyone else find it strange that not one of the sitters ever really dealt with acne? Sure, they mentioned A Pimple here and there, but no one really had bad skin. I personally would have appreciated it as a kid if, say, Mary Anne had struggled with acne, and I'm sure many others would since practically everyone gets pimples in middle school! Hell, I'm way out of high school and I'm still sitting here with clearasil on my face.

Well, we all know that Claudia's skin was flawless, despite all of her junk food eating. It's strange that none of them had a real acne problem. I think that once they hit high school, at least one of them would have had to deal with it.

They probably did but it just wasn't mentioned. I never thought about this because I'm possibly strange in that I don't like hearing about any flaws in the girls' looks. Society is so awfully looks conscious anyway that the BSC books are a really great escape from this for me. Also, strangely, it makes me feel more rather than less insecure when people point out their flaws in looks and I would rather watch beautiful, perfect looking people on tv than "real" people. ;D A lot of the kids - the target audience of these books (something I am frequently forgetting being on these boards ;D) - I know also like reading about "perfect" people. I know lots of people (myself included, definitely ;D) can relate to having acne but I'm actually really glad the books didn't focus on this - or on problems with looks (other than Mal's....) in general. This is just me, though. ;D

I'm surprised they didn't pile acne onto Mal's list of problems with her looks...she had the glasses, braces, frizzy hair, nose she despised, sturdiness...bad skin would have topped it all off! But yeah, it would have been interesting if there were at least some mentions of the sitters really complaining about blemishes, or at least applying Clearisil before they went to bed or at sleepovers or something

^You said it right before I did, about Mal. You know if they were going to do that to a sitter, it would have been Mal. I remember Stacey mentioning a pimple once... but yeah, it's weird.

Well we all know it wouldn't happen to Dawn, with her organic meat-free sugar-free diet I STILL have breakouts, and I'm 24. I envy anyone who left it behind in high school! ;D

Hell, I didn't start having breakouts till late adolescence for some reason. Though now they're a monthly thing. Hormones are weird.
Well we all know the girls except Mal got to skip their awkward stages, going straight from cute 12 year olds to ZOMGSTUNNING! quasi-adults. I'm surprised acne isn't mentioned more in terms of gossip or anything, like "Oh my lord, I hope so and so doesn't ask me to the 5th dance of the year, he's totally a pizza-face!"

There was a girl in Starring the BSC who was implied to have acne. Cokie said that she'd be friends with this girl once her complexion cleared up...

^ Real nice, Cokie. I third the surprise on Mal not having any acne. With her luck, she probably broke out and got called pizza face or crater face or something in addition to Spaz Girl. And really, Claud should've broken out more than once. I really would've liked to have seen a subplot of Claud breaking out and her deciding to give up junk food (temporarily), it would've been fun to read! ;D It's kind of weird that the girls never had more than one pimple at a time, if that. When I was 13, I had terrible bacne (acne on the back). It really sucks, because you feel so self-conscious when wearing tank tops, bathing suits, etc. Thankfully that cleared up long ago! I would've liked to have one of the girls go through something like that, it would've been nice to relate to them in that respect.

^me too fluffycakes. it's way more embarassing than acne on the face i think, because it has a connotation of being "dirty."

I had terrible acne on my back and not much on my face as a teen. The biggest problem for me wasn't the looks (though even I in all my "Kristyness" ;D was pretty self concious about it) but that it was very painful. Every time something touched it, it hurt. I'm so glad that's cleared up now. In BSC Remembers, Logan mentioned a pimple but I never would have noticed it if not for this thread. ;D I am honestly glad they didn't focus on acne - even with more mentions of it - because I don't want to read about it after having to deal with it and I doubt most 10-12 year old girls (or whatever the target audience is) do, either. I think that would increase "looks conciousness" and would have made me paranoid. I know it would make my little cousins paranoid about getting acne if they read their favorite characters focusing on it all the time. I just don't think it's a good thing to get little girls to focus on.

^ When you were a little kid, though? That's more of what I'm talking about. I sometimes forget that my age is not the target audience but my little cousins remind me in differences between people my age and their age. ;D

I wonder if a book or something about an unattractive girl who is successful (popular with her peers, treated well, gets a good boyfriend or is at least seen as a good catch by guys) would made teenage girls feel better.
