i got acne really young--maybe third grade I remember Beezus having acne and washing her face with special acne soap and Ramona calling her "pizza face." I had (cystic) acne about that age, too, and I think it bothered me more that they would just mention it occasionally--like, if gorgeous Stacey freaks out about one pimple, they would have thought I was a hideous monster. (If anyone is interested, I started using clove oil on my zits last year and it's awesome--so much less evil to the rest of my skin than salicyic acid.)

^ Hey alula. That sounds like something good to use. I have found that I am now allergic to salicyic acid (or maybe just really sensitive to it because it seems to make my face VERY itchy and red), so I will try your suggestion with clove oil.
I am also surprised that they did not have more than one pimple. Having pimples usually comes hand in hand with being a teenager, and I would have also liked to read about one of them having to deal with it.

Exactly Alula--mentioning it a little bit make me feel worse because I never had just one pimple.

I keep remembering how much Stacey freaked over the kink in her hair, when she went on that date with Robert. I can only imagine how she'd have reacted to a pimple.

They probably did but it just wasn't mentioned. I never thought about this because I'm possibly strange in that I don't like hearing about any flaws in the girls' looks. Society is so awfully looks conscious anyway that the BSC books are a really great escape from this for me. Also, strangely, it makes me feel more rather than less insecure when people point out their flaws in looks and I would rather watch beautiful, perfect looking people on tv than "real" people. ;D A lot of the kids - the target audience of these books (something I am frequently forgetting being on these boards ;D) - I know also like reading about "perfect" people. I know lots of people (myself included, definitely ;D) can relate to having acne but I'm actually really glad the books didn't focus on this - or on problems with looks (other than Mal's....) in general. This is just me, though. ;D I wonder if people don't like to watch or read about unattractive people because they are usually portrayed negatively and it makes them depressed. I wonder if a book or something about an unattractive girl who is successful (popular with her peers, treated well, gets a good boyfriend or is at least seen as a good catch by guys) would made teenage girls feel better. This is an intersting theory and may be. Not for me, though. I just don't like any mention of looks - good or bad (especially bad, though). This comes from being really sick of people saying cruel and hurtful things to me and judging me based on my looks that I can't change. So, I prefer to just accept that I am the way I am - if you don't like me, don't look at me, and try to focus on other things that I think are more important - like personality, attitude, etc. In my experiences, I've known some petty, looks-concious people. This is just my experience, though, and it seems I'm alone on not wanting to focus on looks and appearance since all four threads that have been posted on today under this sub-board have to do with appearance. To each his own. ;D I think I'll just stop worrying about this because the books didn't focus on looks (that I see) and I'm glad. So, I'll read them and be happy with them. Anyway..... I hope I don't sound really defensive about this but it's another very sensitive subject and I just wanted to clarify my position and my problem with looks in the books. I promise I'll let it go now. ;D I'm thinking of my Kristy quote from April on my calendar - " I was glad it was time for spring vacation since I needed something good in my life" (or something to that effect ;D) It's time for a vacation, I think, or at least some sunshine - Sea City maybe. ;D

I never thought it was odd they didn't mention acne unless they specifically mentioned that Claud NEVERRRRRR breaks out. Saying "omg but she never gets any zits!" seems like a way of acknowledging that the rest of them probably do, so then i wondered why they never actually really mentioned the other girls having zits. but then again, when would they? In chapter 2? That would just be super weird. the only way I can see it coming up really is if it was the focus of a book or something, otherwise it seems like a ridiculous thing to mention.
And personally when I was in jr high, I didn't think anyone had zits but me, I swear I never noticed them on anyone but me, so I thought I was a big weirdo and it was normal to NOT have any skin problems.

I found a reference to acne, which suggests that all may not be completely clear skinned. Was reading an ebook, Dawn's Big Date, where she makes a comment along the lines of how they're all jealous of her good skin and if they ate the same food, they'd have good skin too....I'm at work, so can't find exact quote.

i know what you're talking about... I can actually imagine Kristy having zits with regularity for some reason.

I don't think what you eat necessarily makes a difference in whether or not you get pimples. The rumor where eating chips and chocolate and other junk will give you acne? I think it's more along the lines of genetics, the oils on your skin, pores, touching your face, etc. So, I don't think that the junk food that Claudia eats would really make a difference -- she mentions that she has good genes, which probably helps a lot. I still get pimples and I'm 25 -- my cell phone probably doesn't help, because I notice that most of them end up where my phone is next to my face. Ugh. I still buy clearasil. Also, I dab neosporin on my pimples and they seem to clear up faster that way.
Poor Beezus -- she used medical soap and still got called a pizza face.

I think it's absolutely true. What you put in your body will have an effect on all of your organs, including your skin. Sure, genetics and etc. play a part, as do environment and water ph--but a good, balanced diet with a lot of vitamins can only help.

neosporin..hm..too bad i'm allergic Lol. I got acne pretty bad when i was a teenager, but it started clearing up around the time i was 18. I stil break out every once in awhie but it's not nearly to the extent that it was, so i can deal with it.

I suffer pretty bad acne....but I do also attract my fairshare of men, so while I hate it and it knocks my confidence (it is noticeable) maybe I shouldn't complain....I wonder if the BSC would call me pizza face?

I wonder if a book or something about an unattractive girl who is successful (popular with her peers, treated well, gets a good boyfriend or is at least seen as a good catch by guys) would made teenage girls feel better. That sounds like awesomeness. I always like when a book character isn't gorgeous but still successful and enjoys her life. It's best when characters look like ordinary people: not hideous, but with both beautiful things and flaws in their appearance. Anyway, about acne...they were never a big deal for me and still are not, maybe because I'm pretty lucky in that area. I remember only one time when I had a pimple in my face. But I kind of always assumed that some of them had zits, because they always made a big deal that Claudia never breaks out, so they sometimes do, that's what I think.
