when i was younger i used to love andrew. he seemed really sweet and cute, and his shyness was endearing. but now when i read he just frustrates me. i don't like how everyone babies him so much. i don't think people should encourage people to be shy.
as for karen, nothing will ever make me like her.

I am re-reading SM1 and combined with having just plodded through MA and Camp BSC, really do not like Karen. It's one thing to be extroverted and using the fact you enjoy meeting new people/friends to try and help others (Martha) make friends but in this case, enough! If anything, aside from humiliating Martha, Karen was making it harder for Martha to make friends. Even if Martha had been a little more take charge, with Karen the witchy hurricane bulldozing in front of you, would another young kid really stop and talk with Martha? I don't think so--they'd want to escape Karen!
Andrew, I think is often written as a much younger little boy than he really is. We know he loves boats, the water, and oh yeah his big sister, despite the fact she often (surprise, surprise) is very bossy and/or dismissive of him. As I re-read the Series yet again one thing that jumps out to me regarding Andrew is that he never has any friends. (I have not read many LS books). He never is playing at another kid's house. He never has someone over. In the SS's that he's in, there's never another 4 year old boy for him to play with, but always someone for Karen. It's like he didn't really exist or was lumped with the true "toddlers" (save Gabbie) of the BSC, who although 2-almost 3, acted more like 1-2.

I really love Karen and Andrew's relationship. Although my sister and I are closer in age (she is a year older than me), I can see a lot of similarities between us and Karen and Andrew, especially as I read the LS books. Karen is a good big sister. I also like how most of the LS books start off with Karen and Andrew together. I think they would have been close when they got older.

Andrew was friends with Alicia Gianelli (sp?), Bobby's younger sister. Not much was made of their friendsip though, especially in comparison to Karen.

Andrew also goes to a birthday party in one of the LS books.

^Thanks, I'm glad Andrew a had a couple friend-moments. I felt that was one more way he got over-looked/shadowed by Karen.

it would have been cool if andrew were friends with jamie newton. they are the same age, both adjusting to little sisters, and jamie's friendliness and playfulness would probably help andrew get over his shyness. jamie is the only other four year old boy i can think of in the series, but i think they would actually get along really well.

^Aw that could have been sweet, Andrew and Jamie. I was a big Jamie fan, especially early on. I know Kristy took Karen on her job to the Kormans and probably on others to the Papadakises so why not take Andrew to Jamie's? I think the only other 4 year old boy was Johnny Hobart. I do remember in "Here Come the Bridesmaids," that Jamie was one of the mismatched, "different" grouping of kids who came over to the Hobarts and I think the two of them had played at least once before, so maybe the three of them even could have gotten together.

oh, i forgot about johnny. it would be so sweet to see them all together. to me johnny and jamie seem so much alike that they would just have to be friends.

Funny about Andrew and Jamie because they probably look identical.

But don't forget, everyone -- in BSC land, Andrew and Jamie live "too far away" from each other to play (even though, in reality, it's probably only a 5 minute drive from house to house. It is Stoneybrook, after all).

Yeah, how big was Stoneybrook that Brewers and Karen's mom's house were so far away from each other and any of the other sitters? I would have liked to seen the BSC sit for Karen and Andrew when they were at their mom's house more. It would have made more sense as well as they spent majority of their year there.

^I agree. Also did anyone other than Kristy (and Bart) ever sit for Andrew and Karen at Lisa's? I know MA, Claudia, Stacey, Dawn, and Jessi all sat for them at Watson's but don't think any of them did at Lisa's.
