I never really liked Karen in the regular BSC books. What a little brat. But I liked her in the LS books. She was a typical seven year old with a manipulative side. Karen reminds me of Michelle Tanner. Now Michelle is OBNOXIOUS. I always liked Andrew a lot. He was shy and quiet, yes, but he seemed sweet and sensitive. I wish people would pay attention to him more, though. I remember, in Kristy's Great Idea, all he ever said was "yeah". Seriously, though, I didn't agree that since Karen was a big talker, Andrew hardly ever needed to talk. At least he spoke up more in the later series. I feel bad for him because it doesn't seem like he has much friends. He's pretty attached to Karen. I always liked Karen and Andrew's relationship. Karen is a sweet big sister. She always looks out for Andrew. I think the only time she was "mean" was in Karen's Worst Day, when she blamed Andrew for something (I don't remember what but I know it wasn't his fault). Other than that, Karen told Andrew scary stories...

I like Andrew too. He's always so cute in pics. (Not including the original cover of Kristy's Big Day...)

One of my favorite things about having become an LS fan and having read all the books is that Andrew was much better developed in those stories than he ever was in the BSC books. I cheer whenever I read Karen's Christmas Carol and Andrew enjoys being in the community theater play--such a positive difference from when in an early BSC book he was upset over having to play a skating bear in his class play. I do think a lot of the time Karen is a great big sister to Andrew. I just read Karen's Hurricane and Karen does her best to help comfort Andrew during the storm. There is also a scene right at the beginning when Andrew thanks Karen for being a good big sister after she had calmed him down and she thanks him for being a good brother--that was so sweet. I also absolutely love how in Karen's Unicorn Andrew learns to ride a two wheeler thanks to his own persistence and Karen's encouragement. I feel like in the LS books we get to know both of them better and see their relationship as siblings. In the BSC and maybe a reason for this was to promote the LS at least early on, Andrew is cast aside and readers are supposed to be drawn to Karen and her wild stories and just how cool it is that she is Kristy's sister. That's great and everything, I just mean Andrew was also Karen's brother.

LOL! I don't hate Karen as much as everybody else does. I guess because, like you, I liked her when I was a kid! I've always hated her obsession with Ben Brewer and Morbidda Destiny, though. So boring and it seemed like *every* time somebody babysat her, they were dealing with ghosts and crap. YAWN. She was a brat sometimes, but meh. Most kids are. I loved in Babysitters on Board when she went and got a manicure. I was shocked that Kristy let her go off by herself, though. As for Andrew.. he's just boring. KAREN IS NOT A BRAT! HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT !!! SHES VERY NICE!!!

hehe I loved when Karen went off in Baby-sitters on Board and got her manicure. That was hilarious. Yeah Kristy was an idiot for allowing a 6 year old to "run back to the room" but it was still funny. I don't think Karen is a bad kid, she's just spoiled and knows she can get away with basically anything she wants to. Who wouldn't take advantage of that? KRISTY IS NOT A IDIOT!!!

Like a good number of people I was a big Karen fan as a kid...have to say though the older I get, the more her negative traits became apparent with the reread..with that said, I don't see her as bad as people make her out to be and think she can use some better press. I can still relate to her during certain instances and think her feelings during those occasions were justified. While the ghosts and witches thing can get old and frustrating at worst, it isn't a federal crime..and I see her deciding to get a manicure and soda as being naughty, sneaky, mischievous, but not BRATTY..I feel haters like to throw the word around loosely. And the statement that she got away with everything is incorrect..some were not that big of a deal and didn't deserve anything more than an admonishing, if that..there was a time she was punished for a stupid reason, just for wanting to be with her good friends alone..or that one time she was scolded for not wanting to share the cupcakes that were for her classmates. Like I said in other threads, she has a number of Kristy's traits and probably reminded Kristy of herself when she was her age (she was, kind of as revealed in her Kristy's Portrait Collection..like the time she sneaked into the movies with her brothers and afterwards wasn't even sorry) so of course it would be hypocritical to give someone grief for a flaw that you also have and are just as bad at..Karen just shows her sensitive side more..while there were moments she was bratty, what child her age has never been annoying or did anything worthy of punishment, fiction or non fiction? While she is kind of like Michelle, I see Stephanie in her, too..Stephanie did her share of naughty things around that age and even as she got older. There doesn't seem to be resentful for the time Margo shoplifted that one time(which is a FEDERAL OFFENSE) and only got scolded by Jessi..no punishment..just returned the knickknacks, paid for the gum and that was that. Also like to point out how Sam is the biggest tease..at age 14-15 and HE wasn't thrown under the bus.
Agreed with everyone that she was more fleshed out in LS.
Andrew..he had his moments he was sweet and some where he was a pain.

Great points, LadyDruscilla. I always thought Karen along with Andrew was mostly sweet and like many typical seven-year-olds. Here's how I imagine Karen and Andrew looking like today... In my fanfiction timeline, Karen is an archeologist living in Chicago while Andrew is an architect living in upstate New York not too far from where Elizabeth Brewer grew up.

Andrew seems like he’d be cute, I think I liked him more in the regular books over the LS series sometimes.

I think Karen and Andrew have a neat brother-sister relationship today. I can see Karen e-mailing Andrew about her South African experiences, including a few spiritual as well as cultural experiences, in detail. I can also imagine Andrew telling her about an experience during his architecture business trip to Mississippi and Louisiana and how different it is from upstate New York and Chicago. Karen may have even told Andrew and Emily Michelle about the surprise she has upon her return to the States in two weeks.
